Using Midget Rostyles

Post by Andy W »

Hi,
So, I get that the only cheap alternative to std rims for a 1968 Minor are Midget Rostyle rims (& that MGB rims are not suitable).
As they are 13", does that mean I have a smaller diameter with tyres fitted & if so, am I right in thinking that gives me a tad more acceleration but a tad less top speed?
Would there be a "bigger" tyre to fit the Midget rims to make the same rolling radius as std?

Any pics. of Midget rims on Minors welcome! :)

Andy.

Assuming you're currently on 145/80/14 or 155/80/14.

13" Midget Rostyles and tyres with a ratio of 80 like 165/80/13 will yield a difference in circumference of about 5%, so not particularly noticeable speed-wise but you might have more black sidewall visible than you do now. Tyres with a smaller ratio like 165/70/13 will be about 10% smaller but look of normal proportions.

Andy w,

I might enquire why they are cheap? Rostyles have a poor record of failure (particularly evident among the club racers). I would be checking very carefully for any signs of fatigue around the fixing holes.

Treated gently, they are likely good - but one does not know the history of second hand wheels.

I mean cheap in the general sense rather than a particular set I am looking at.

Ideally I'd like 14" Minilites but they are over £80 a pop plus tyres new, with none around s/h - way above my budget, esp. as I need a new clutch kit & want to fit the AP clutch kit which is a quick £200!
I will need a couple of tyres soon on my standard rims which got me looking at cost effective ways of improving handling........

MarkyB....great picture, takes me back, I had a red van 30 yrs ago!
Are those 165/80 tyres? They look fine to me in terms of filling the arches.

It was a while ago!
From memory they were 165/80 tyres.
