IslipMinor, did you mean that the carburettor to air filter has 4 bolts on a 44 but only 2 on a 38?

My alternative to using the 1098 filter case is half of a pair of MGB cases. I've got this on an HS4 on a Midget 1275 and I think it looks sort of in the spirit of authenticity! I may at some stage adapt the curved inlet pipe - because it is two bolt fixing you can't just swivel these cases round like the 1098 version. It has a standard filter at the moment, but as the car is not up and running yet I can't report on performance.

Don't bother spotting all the missing bits - it's very much work in progress!

Midget airboxes may work too - basically the same but the trunk is straight.

I was advised that the Midget boxes would be too restrictive as they are intended for twin HS2 carbs.

Paul,

No, the air filter to carburettor body is always 2 bolts. It is the fitting to the manifold I was referring to, but it looks like the HIF 38 can have 4 fixing holes, the same as the HIF 44. I have found references and pictures of HIF 38's with 2 and 4 holes! In practice it does not matter, as the fixing pattern is the same.

Mark,

just a warning on your Midget if you haven't checked it yet, i know you are fitting an HS2, but if you fit a single HIF44 to a Midget, the top of the damper pot hits the bonnet, partly because the single carb manifolds available for Minis have the inlet angled down by 15°. The solution is to either modify the damper pot ( not something i would want to do) or make a 15° wedge shaped adaptor to go between manifold and carb, which is what i've done. This drops the carb enough to give about 10mm clearance between carb and bonnet.

The other point, which is relevant to fitting HIF carbs to Minors, and may be relevant depending on which manifold you are using, is that the HIF is designed to be installed either level, or up to 40° in a downflow arrangement, i.e. pointing downwards towards the engine. Mini manifolds are Ok because they have a 15° angled inlet.

Thanks Gavin, but looks like I have caused some confusion - my Midget 1275 is the engine, not the car! The carb is an HS4 on a mini manifold, and doesn't look to be in too much danger of fouling the bonnet on my Traveller
