Sump leaking after new gasket

Postby Fraser dalgleish » Mon Jul 08, 2019 11:16 pm

Hi I am just wondering if anyone could help me I put a new gasket in for my sump but it is still leaking at the 2 curves and is dripping down both sides I don’t know if I maybe put them in wrongly possibly cut them wrongly.

Thanks Fraser

There are quite a few threads on sump gaskets on this forum.
Was your gasket cork? was it soaked in oil before fitting?

It appears soaking the seal in new engine oil is the way to go, but there are different thoughts on how much to trim off the cork seal.
Some manuals say 3.2 mm others say 2.4 mm proud and some even say 1/4" proud which is 6.3mm

If I was doing it I would soak the cork gasket, trim it to an average of the above measurements and see how it goes.
Some use sealer to obtain an oil tight seal but it is not required, some also use a smear of blue holymar which as long as its a smear and not oozing out should be ok.

I'm sure a more knowledgeable person will be along soon with a definitive answer but this is my tuppence worth.

Thankyou Very much
See how you are saying the 2.4mm and the other ones is that got to sit 2.4mm above or cut down so it’s below the level

You can soak the cork seal in oil to make it more supple but grease is the recommended medium.

The cork may need to be trimmed as per the diagram below. The cork must be trimmed square and protrude the distance stated below.

Further to above:-

Grease the two side gaskets and attach to the block. It makes life much easier when fitting the sump as those two gaskets are already in place.

Note the point about the seal housing - it may have to be filed down to give a perfect fit.

So you see where it says it sits proud by 2.4mm does that mean it is above The sump face by 2.4mm at each side of the U gasket.

Very timelyl for me, as I am trying to cure sizeable "seepage" from both ends of my Marina Engine (unusually fitted to a Marina :D ).
I do have some old gaskets sets which have the items that I require--but which are the best type/make to choose please?
Should say, before anyone suggests it ,that I am cleaning the filter can on timing case and will consider a set of shells if I think suitable.

The ends of cork seal should stand proud of the sump top face by 1/8" or 3.2mm. The standing proud is required so as to give some compression to the cork seal which gives a better and more effective seal.

You can use the ridged plastic type sump seal or the cork seal. My preference is the cork seal because at least with the cork seal there is some latitude for the fitting.

I prefer the rubber seal as opposed to the cork seal but opinions differ and this has been discussed many many times.
