OK, so with such a variety of engine sizes, I know there'll be a bit of a range, but does anyone know what sort of weight an A series engine is, when fitted with Ancillaries like manifolds, Carburettor, Dynamo.?
Reason I ask is that I don't have room for one of those typical engine hoists that are about 1.5 mtrs front to back, so I'm wondering about constructing a hoist frame inside the garage, using scaffold poles.

Not sure this will help but interesting. http://www.miniweights.co.uk/engine.html
A mini engine with combined gearbox in the sump is approximately 330 lbs, minus say half cwt for gearbox, for engine alone.
All approximate weights, however, if you construct a device suitable for the mini engine/box combination you should be well covered.

That's what I did when removing my Austin 7 engine, it uses a trailer winch to do the lifting.
I just lifted the engine and rolled the car out of the way.
I have since bought an engine crane to do the Morris transplant with as I have more space available now.
Maybe I should get rid of the original lifting gear ?
