New Clutch, can't get a gear

Postby VAN_D00M » Thu Sep 12, 2019 5:41 pm

Hi,
Old clutch was worn with biting point right at the top and would slip but gears went in.
Took 3 clutch kits sent out to get it the pressure plate to tighten down properly.

With the engine back together and the linkage adjusted I could acceptably (little crunching) get 2,3,4,R & 1st if I went in from 2nd. I went up and down the yard, got the car to temp.

Come back 3 hours later, now I can't get any gears without crunching at standstill.
I've had the linkage in a position with the correct amount of play and with no play at all, no go.
When the clutch is pressed at standstill with the engine running It sounds like it's rumbling and as you go for a gear you can hear rough spinning and then the teeth'll clash.

If I start in a gear I'm alright. Biting point feels to be towards the top.

What more can I do? Any ideas?
Thanks

I’m wondering it the driven plate is round the wrong way, not sure if that’s possible though. Trying 3 clutch kits doesn’t sound too good, maybe a clue there?

I would look at the clutch linkage.
I think you are saying that the clutch doesn't bite until the pedal is near to the top. If you carefully try to engage the gear while slowly pushing the pedal down is there a point before the pedal reaches the floor where the gear will engage?

driven plate is stamped with which way it fits.

I think its not adjusted correctly. if not that, have you got the clips holding the thrust bearing in correctly?

Not the pressure plate as that cannot be fitted incorrectly.

The driven plate can be fitted the wrong way round but it is difficult to do so as the central boss of the driven plate usually fouls the rear of the crankshaft and it becomes obvious that something is wrong before you get to far down the fitting process.

The driven plate is usually stamped 'Flywheel Side'.

I realise the plate is stamped for orientation, nonetheless. However I now know from subsequent posts that complete assembly the wrong way is not possible.

Hi,
I agree with the above posts, this sounds like a linkage adjustment issue to me.
Best wishes,
Mike.

think I did it so there was 10mm play at the pedal before you felt resistance.

also, years ago, I didn't fit the 2 clips that hold the thrust bearing to the clutch fork correctly and this made it difficult to engage 1st and reverse.
