Brake pipe clamping

Post by mobylette »

I am going to be attending to my sticking front brake cylinder(s) when the replacement rubbers turn up. I would rather not clamp the rubber brake pipe. What is the best method to prevent loss of brake fluid?

Never had a problem with this type of flexible brake pipe clamp.

It is when the tool has a sharp edge to the clamp that the flexible pipe gets damaged especially internally where you cannot see.

That is an excellent little clamp and not expensive,
I have had one identical for around 20 years and never had a problem,

But,

If you are clamping off a brake line have the clamp on for the shortest time possible, a clamped line is fine for hours at a time but I've seen people leave them on for weeks, and that will damage the line,

Don't over tighten the clamp, you will be surprised how little you need to tighten the clamp to hold the fluid back, severe over tightening can hurt the line,

Lastly NEVER line clamp stainless braided lines, I realise most won't have these on their cars, but some will, especially on their disc conversions,

Just my opinions.

With the master cylinder being under the floor, there is very little intrinsic pressure so only light clamping pressure is required to stop the flow. If you have a remote reservoir fitted, seal the cap with cling film.

I use fine jawed Molegrips , adjustable gaps and tension , easy access.

I use them but put a 50p each side to spread the load

I have ended up replacing flexi pipes twice after using a clamp. I found the best way was to round off the end of a plastic paint brush and use it to block off the end of the brake line as you disconnect it from the cylinder.
