It goes in the top and leaks out the usual places.

Sorry couldn't resist. :D

The diagram is in the BMC wksp man. Section AA. Illustration AA.2.
Whilst it is for the Series 2 the only real difference is in the way the oil is fed to and from the oil filter, everything else is the same.
Section AAA has a general description of the full flow lubrication system and filter fitted to the 948cc and 1098cc engines. See also illustration AAA.2

The direction of flow through the filter is what I want to know Phil. Thanks for the info.

The oil flow is from the oil pump to the oil filter head via the oil pressure relief valve and the external feed pipe attached to the block. The oil then passes through the filter head and filter element (outside of the element to the inside of the element) and from the center of the oil filter/filter head to the main offside fore and aft oil gallery via an internal drilling/gallery. The rest of the oil flow around the engine is the same as the Ser 2.

The reason I am inquiring is because this filter I have (Fram) has a couple of fine strands of glue in the main body of the filter, initially it looked like fine fuse wire but when I hooked one strand out, it was glue. So I wanted to know if the flow was through the filter centre and out the series of holes around the filter perimeter, in which case the glue strands would be ‘filtered’ so to speak, and go no further. The other strand I cannot reach so far, so is still inside.
