Really interesting article, thanks for posting.
For those who haven't read It, I'd recommend Graham Robson's book A series engine The first sixty years. It's a great read and covers the whole history of the engine in great detail. It also looks in detail at all the developments and prototype engines that could have replaced the engine. Some of the opportunities that BL passed up are enough to make you weep. What could have been.....
