The normal block and no 'decking' required.

I wish there had been a plentiful supply of cheap 1098 blocks around when we built up the original engine around the 948 block in the early 70's. We spent quite a lot on Powermax +0.060" flat top pistons (994cc) and line boring the block for bearings - could have spent it on doing more with the power delivery side of the engine instead!

Am I right in thinking that apart from the oil pump drive, camshafts are interchangable between all A series engines - i.e a 286 will fit equally well in a small or large bore block, and there are not 'small bore' and 'large bore' versions of the same profiles?

Been a while since I bought a Cam!

Cheers,

Al

Hi Folks, been making some progress on the car, but not on the engine. I have a slave engine in the chassis to help with the bodywork design, but am still on the lookout for a donor 1098 block if anyone has one within reasonable traveling distance of Fife?

If anyone is interested, here's what the car looks like at the moment. (not much like a Moggy!)

Just thought I'd add to this. Although, you do get a full set of 3 cam bearings for the 1100 - the 950 has bigger (wider @3mm each) 'mains' bearings and journals.
As a consequence the mains end-caps are larger and also the locating dowels are bigger too.

Added to that, you can pick up second hand mini 998 pistons and rods on the cheap and get the 950 bored out accordingly, if you're on a budget.

I just took delivery of a 1098 engine I bought off Evilbay, which very helpfully came with a spare head, shown in the photos, but not described. So, I now have 2 295 heads! :-)

But, one has obviously been skimmed (about 1.5mm), so now I need to work out which to keep....

I have been planning to use flat top pistons, so I suppose the skimmed one, unless I decide to fit a 940 (if I can avoid pocketing the block?)

Decisions decisions!

it's better than knocking lumps out of it with the valves!

but I agree, I'd like to avoid it if I can

Just sink the valves slightly - you can then 'unmask' them in the head with a small mounted point. But the valve sizes with a 940 are such that breathing is not a problem with a limited revs 1098 engine.

I'm on the look out for a (not too dear....) 948 crank and a set of 998 flat top A+ pistons & Rods, if anyone has any spare?

I have a crank, but it's in the engine I've been using as a set up unit, and it's rather imprisoned by the body buck for the forseeable future........
