Any Idea how to do this as the current system just does not work.
Is it possible to put in stronger springs or something?

Thanks for the link. Not keen on fixing other bits and filling holes. Think for now will make some Ash wedges.

The telescopic struts are ideal and they screw into the original holes. My drive slopes downhill from the garage and I always reverse in. The original door stays were incapable of holding the doors open especially if there was a slight breeze. The only down side is that the struts from the Birmingham MMC have got rather expensive. Anyone tried fitting van door hooks?

What i done was swap the part that screws to the middle rail over with the opposite side. Then i made a small lever and fitted it under the nut on the spring loaded pin. The result was that when the strut is in the open position the spring loaded pin drops behind the strut prventing the door from closing. when i want to shut the door i press the lever which in turn lifts the pin out of the way and allows the strut to move.

The domed spring loaded pin will come apart and then you can fit tougher springs. Retains everything as original. If the springs are too long then you will have to lift the slider part when you try closing the door, otherwise you have the reverse problem and the door is likely to break away before it shuts!

a clothes peg works well and is cheaper

Here are the pictures, as the strut isnt on the car at the moment i have clamped it in a vise so you can see how it works.

Hope this makes it a bit clearer, its what works for me and doesnt cost anything.

Remove the stay and use a junior hacksaw to cut a 90 degree corner in the rear part of the hook (not good enough with photoshop to draw an arrow to illustrate)

Downside is you have to raise the stay to clear the bracket when shutting the door. It's simple and it works.

Resurrecting a very old post, but would like to thank Millerman for his very useful suggestion of creating 'right angles' on the stay bars.

Took all of 10 minutes with an angle grinder, and now have doors that stay open perfectly!!!

New thanks to Badger (via Millerman) and Yellowduck. As an amateur it took me several goes and rather more than 10 minutes with an anglegrinder before I found the sweet spot - but once I was there it worked a treat.

Lucky DMG were temporarily out of stock of their gas strut rear stay conversion kits. Who knows whether I might have fallen to a rather expensive temptation!
