paint cracking on door

Post by anubis121 »

went to get in my moggy just now and noticed a big crack(about 30 cms long)on the door paint that was not there in the morning. Any ideas what this could be?

Expansion and contraction of the bodywork through too-thick layers of paint is usually a cause...

Too thick paint (and it would need to be REALLY thick).. or more likely - thick filler plastered on the door!

Where was the crack? A straight horizontal line 1/3 way up the door by any chance...?

Halfway to the bottom!? Where from? Horizontally, vertically?

HAs it had new door bottom repair panels fitted? I've seen places bond panels on rather than weld them. If its bonded and that joint is moving due to the warm weather then that could be your problem

Maybe worth taking the inside door panel off to see if there's signs of any previous work thats been done.

Same on the rear wings??? Oh dear - sounds like maybe a bodge up/quick spray over job. It's not going to be inexpensive I'm afraid. Depends what the filler is hiding... Is this car a recent purchase ? If so - I would be taking it back for 'money back'.......(sorry - I can't remember the history of every thread).

yeah...ive had it seen to today. Turns out its a rubbish paint job and its just a case of rubbing it down and a respray over the affected area.the rear wing is not too bad at the moment, but I can see all the work needed is going to cost me a fortune.

did they tell you why it had cracked, its very rarely just the top coat,as has been said, too thick paint ,filler ,repair panel .etc. Be careful that the underlying cause ,if not sorted, may return after you pay for a respray, even a poor respray would not be the main cause of this sort of cracking.

It's too thick paint apparently. My fiancee has just told me she knew about it when she brought the car.wish she had told me sooner!.

if thats the case it won't be a simple rub down and repaint,IT WILL COME BACK,the crack usually goes all the way into the primer as well. It needs stripping back to bare metal and re doing, Don't pay for just as above you will be doing it again in 6 months time
