Re: Advice please!
You can check the mot history with the registration which could help with some things.

Re: Advice please!
The crossmember is just peeling paint or underseal like you've said. Hard to tell what bits are like on moggies without stripping down. Iv just rebuilt my body tho its a traveller. Think it should have strengthening add to the sills when the conversion was done. Tho I hear many don't. Hopefully someone else can advise you more. Sounds a nice little adventure getting it tho!

Re: Advice please!
Hi Greendefender123,
Thanks for that. I do believe the sills should have some additional long members strengthening and also some cross members also added
I'm currently deciding whether to take a few days driving it home or getting it transported.

Thats the best adventure, driving it home! Unforgettable drive home from Scotland in a Bentley, bringing my Traveller home across country and collecting an old Merc from the south coast....be brave!

Re: Advice please!
Why should it require welding work to A post - AFTER convertion - and front drs re-hanging?
Has the underseal cracked due to bodyshell integrity being compromised?
Also, a Lancashire connection....
Sounds like one to avoid!!

Further investigations uncovered it was an inside job!!

Re: Advice please!
Just because a minor is "restored" by a renowned specialist / dealer does not make of a good car necessarily. Two years ago I took a day off work and drove 170 miles to view a traveler that had been "recently restored" by the same specialist stated .I was sent photographs of the work before , during and after and I was hooked. When I got to the car within five minutes of inspecting, I ended up walking away ..... the car was awful with poor paintwork, shabby welding hidden by thick underseal and ill fitting doors. Check the car thoroughly and ignore that fact that it's been "restored" by a well known specialist.[ and this isn't the first "restored " minor I've walked away from, done by a "specialist". Good luck

Re: Advice please!
If it has stayed in use for at least twenty years since conversion it can't have been that bad a job. And further welding being needed after that length of time isn't all that unusual, the A posts being possibly the hardest part of the car to rustproof. That said, I too am sceptical about professional restoration, simply because I can't see how the amount of work needed on many Minors can possibly be done properly on a commercial basis. If you've any doubts you need to walk away, even after travelling that far. I do hope it's a good'un.

Re: Advice please!
With that 'cracking' I would AVOID AVOID like the plague ! Even if it's just in the 'underseal' -it must be caused by the metal parts flexing. Test with any Convertible is for two of you to get in the car and jump up and down - do the door gaps open and close ?? If the seller won't let you do this - run away - fast. And as advised above - check the MOT history on the DVLA website to see what has gone before. Don't just rely on the seller showing a few pass certificates - he's obviously not going to show you any fails !!

Re: Advice please!
Thank you too all who replied, The photos were a little misleading and in reality what I thought was a large crack was in fact 2 cms of underseal come away. The other ones where were the wings are bolted on and nothing to worry about.
Car was remarkable solid underneath and all the correct strengthening and more has been put in place when the car was professionally converted.
Very happy with our buy!!

Re: Advice please!
Excellent! It isn't easy finding a good convertible. I looked at many before buying mine. You have to be prepared to take a bit of a gamble sometimes..... If the underseal is starting to crack and come away, remove the loose bits (which will trap moisture and cause corrosion) and for now just apply waxoyl or something similar for protection.
Hope you enjoy it. There's still a bit of summer left yet

Re: Advice please!
Why should the underseal "crack" in the first place?
Best off stripping off ALL the underseal and seeing what's what.

Re: Advice please!
Over the years underseal tends to dry out and crack, then start coming away from the surface allowing damp in. It needs to be kept an eye on.POMMReg wrote:Why should the underseal "crack" in the first place?
