Bumper protection

I've purchased new "high quality "chrome bumpers for my Traveller and I'm wanting to provide as much protection against corrosion as possible. The old front bumper I removed appears to be non-original, of a similar standard to the new one, with a dull silvery finish to the rear face and the corrosion which has occurred is mainly at the edges of bolt holes and the starter handle hole. (It's actually not that bad really, I'm now thinking I might have been over-fussy...)
Is it advisable to protect the rear face with waxoil or similar before fitting to the fibreglass valance, or perhaps to paint it with Hammerite or POR-15?
