Fitting a parcel shelf

Can anyone help with the fitting of a parcel shelf to a car that appears not to ever have had one? How do I mark the position of the forward holes through carpeting etc? Also I only have the cardboard piece. What holds it in on the sides?
Any help greatfully received.
Ta.

There should be a piece of angle-iron with small brakets on each end. This goes at the front of the parcel shelf, where it would do the most damage in an accident - preferably with a sharp edge facing your shins... :(

The brackets are screwed through the vinyl scuttle panels, and there should be some captive nuts in the metal behind.

The angle iron should be padded with a pipe insulation type foam... probably not much use in a serious smash but will stop you bruising yourself getting it or out (or your head when crawling under there to fix something...)
I believe they are like this as standard & then have a vinyl cover which wraps round the foam carrying on through to cover the card.
They are pretty useful it has to be said.....

Yes, sorry, there is the crash-bar-padding stuff. You can get that from Newton Commercial, and that offers a little protection on the shelf.

Does this metalwork support the shelf along it's entire length? Or are there two handed pieces, one for either end?

Nope, just one bar which spans the width of the car. If you can have a look at a suitably equipped mog, that should sort you out...

I guess I will have to but where to find one?? I have a week off at the end of next week and want everything in my hand to do the raft of jobs lined up for me.
Oh and some dry weather would be nice too

You are now going back to a post 15 years old and 'Peetee' has not been posting here for a looong time!
However.......there were a variety of parcel shelves fitted to the various models of Morris Minors, but I think they were all secured by a biggish screw at either end of the horizontal bar which supports the shelf, into the scuttle panels and by a series of bifurcated rivets to the bulkhead. You can find them in the engine bay in a row running horizontally, just below the petrol pump. In my SII there are also two nuts and bolts holding the shelf bar to the heater, and two more bolts that come down from the wooden strips in the battery tray.
I did this job myself a while back and will see if I can find the thread to the link, in case its helpful to you.

Here you go: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=65935&p=604424&hili ... lf#p604424
You can get the bifurcated rivets, like I did, but small nuts, bolts and washers might well be easier to fit.
As I mentioned earlier, the design of the shelves did vary over the years so, unless you have a SII as well, there may be slight variations in how your is fitted but you should be able to work it out.
