Rear Springs

Post by pandaman »

Evening All
My recently acquired 1971 Morris has rusty rear springs, so can I oil them or do they have rubber inserts which require silicone spray as used for the springs rubber bushes.

i like my late father always clean the springs.
wire brush, etc,, then spray with old engine oil.
i get an old blanket from charity shop and lay it underneath and spray it on.
let it drip for a while, blanket in a bin bag then down to the tip.
job done

Only oil if the spring leaf does not have a wear step on its underside where the end of the spring leaf below moves/rubs against the underside of the leaf above.
If the spring leaf has a wear step and the springs are lubricated it can allow the spring leaves to move further and allow the ends of the leaf to bang against the wear step which could result in a broken spring.
You must examine the underside of the spring leaves before oiling.
Oiling from new is the way to go.
