Indicator Stalk Problem

Post by BIGRAB »

When indicating left stalk doesn't stay up and keeps falling back.

Before I take steering wheel etc off to investigate any idea if something is broken/missing or it could be some form of adjustment is required.

If broken would rather have part around to fit when I take wheel off.

What year is the car? Earlier 948 had a combined indicator / horn (non self cancelling) later a stalk with a light on the end and a cowling around the steering wheel.

Once you get the cowl off the assembly is relatively simple
and it is likely that one of the side bits is bent or not screwed down firmly.

I recently repaired mine, which was failing to lock on in one direction.

I found that the detent mechanism for that direction was completely worn out. The metal detent was severely worn. No repair was feasible. I went to my parts bin and found another arm/detent/auto-cancelling mechanism and changed over the electrical switching board (partly removed in the above photo). It now works perfectly.

I hope this helps.

Have stripped down and think I can see the problem.

Unable to make out the picture out 100% but is there a small spring that bridges between the two cam type things that trip the stalk back, the main part of the spring is at the red wire.

If so I have no spring hence the problem.

Yes it acts as a counter balance when the indicator is pushed up or down and as you say is likely to keep the stalk in place. Searching on the internet under morris minor indicator assembly will give you access to the original image which may be clearer and also many different images from different angles

Jm,

Thanks for that, I've blown up the picture and the said spring on mine is missing.

Now to find one ?

I would suggest looking on the car floor but if it has come off I think one of the end hooks is likely to be broken as it is held in place by the electrical contact board and unlikely therefore to have simply fallen off. If you can't find one, fleabay / auto jumble etc are likely candidates. I got a whole NOS lucas boxed of the earlier mechanism for my 1957 4 door for £10.00 at an auto jumble.

Bonne Chance.

The mechanism appears to rely on the two spring tensioned arms which are screwed down and on which the electric board os mounted. If one of those larger springs is broken or not hooked over the arms it will result in the symptoms you describe. The small spring is needed but the larger ones are crucial to keep the stalk up or down or indeed in the neutral position. Do you have a picture of yours in dismantled state ?

See the link below.

The two heavy type springs to the left and right are intact.

The one I'm missing is the smaller one right in the centre of the picture, the main spring body being right on top of the red wire.
