Door draught excluder - correct colour?

Post by GeordieDave »

Do we have a guide to the correct colour of door draught excluder for particular bodywork colours? My car is a 1962 two door saloon (DL, no less) in Rose Taupe with duotone red interior but I find it hard to believe that these cars left the factory with such design intricacies as colour co-ordinated door seals.

Ray Newell's Book 'Original Morris Minor' P 72 gives your trim colour as 'Tartan Red' which matched the carpets, it says you should have duo tone upholstery, red coastline and OEW grille and wheels.

I don't want my car to be concourse - I'm just happy if it starts. I have everything as listed above, except the red go-faster stripe, which is a job for another day :D

People who have used this type of draught excluder have reported that this type has the best fit, I bought the clip on red type and found that the cloth edge frays easily. If I replace mine this would be one I would use.

All of them tend to fray, except the later all plastic trim hence the metal protectors on entering the car on the door frame. I found that some clear spray glue at the cut ends stopped fraying at those points but it needs tope applied pretty soon after fitting and when cutting, very sharp tin snips are necessary as you are cutting through aluminium, rubber and cloth at the same time.

I wasn't aware of these 'all plastic' draught excluders and haven't seen any. Both of my 1968 Minors had original cloth-covered excluders. When did BLMC do away with these?

Been trying to find out about all-black door seal trims but without success. I think the coloured trims continued throughout Minor production although the very last Travellers may have had all-black. Very early (1971/2) Marinas had coloured trims/seals but they were plastic-coated not fabric.

I have seen the all plastic ones on very late minors and some LCV, only in Black, it may be that they were adapted from other models of that time i.e. Marina, Mini etc. The VW Beetle uses a similar door seal.

This is the sort of thing and appears to be universal

Woolies do a plush door trim in various colours. This might be less likely to fray.
