One for the scrutinisers!

Post by Chappers »

This is interesting, can anybody advise....?
The rocker cover on my 1965 saloon needs a bit of tidying up, and I thought I would start by ordering new nameplates etc.

Question 1
The pic of my rocker cover shows the “Morris” plate secured by pop rivets. I assume this is incorrect and they should be aluminium blind (semi tubular rivet) like the ones on the Weslake patent plate?

Question 2
This is a good one... The Weslake patent plate on my engine states “ The following patents are embodied in this “POWER UNIT”.
All the plates I can find on the web state “ENGINE” (not power unit)?
Also some of the patent numbers are missing when compared to the new ones available.

Have I got a super rare rocker cover worth lots of money that needs preserving as-or perhaps some scrapyard one from an old boat engine or generator🤔?

Any ideas, or am I being too fussy? I just want to tidy it up.
Anyone got any thoughts?

The Morris badge fitted to your rocker cover is not original.
I suspect the rocker cover originally carried a Austin logo.
It has been replaced - note the rivets. The rivets should be as per the Weslake Patents plate - blind with no centre hole.

Conducting a quick pole - Austin rocker covers had 'Power Unit' whilst Morris had 'Engine'.

So your rocker covert is not rare but a pseudo Banksey - but do not try to shred - it will not do the shredder any good and it will not increase its value as a piece of conceptional art.

Regarding the Banksey observation I wonder if he was in cahoots with the buyer, a gamble, that apparently paid off, to increase the value on resale for a nice profit. What a suspicious guy I am! As if these gentlemen would do such a thing for money. :o
