I need to replace my starter motor & was thinking of upgrading to one of the hi torque ones as ever since having a reconditioned 1275 engine fitted, I've found the standard starter motor is ok, but seems a bit overworked with the higher compression...
So I'm interested to hear if anyone has had experience using one, but more about which one is best to buy? as after looking online there are about four different ones ranging from £180 - £300

Re: hi torque starter motor
I personally would not buy a hi torque starter motor unless my standard starter motor was scrap and then I would have to be really desperate.
The standard starter motor in good condition is more than adequate for turning over a 1275cc 'A' Series engine with approx. 8.8 - 1 compression ratio dependent upon pistons fitted,
My well tuned 1380cc 'A' Series engine has a high compression ratio - with 19.5cc combustion chambers (you can do the maths) is turned over on a standard 1275cc starter motor with absolutely no problems ever.
If you need a new starter motor - buy a new standard one and save yourself a few quid.

Re: hi torque starter motor
As Phil - our 1380 has a 10.5:1 CR and a standard starter motor spins it over with ease. This one has a 9T pinion, but the previous one had 10T, which spun it over even faster.
The battery is a 3-year old Yuasa 065, which is quoted as having a 55Ah capacity and CCA (cold cranking amps) of 500. The earth lead is the original braided wire that was fitted in 1958 (unless it was changed before my mother bought in 1965), and runs from the gearbox to the crossmember.
Save your money for something more interesting!

Hello,
I replaced the tired starter on my 1967 Traveller with the Isuzu GSR 16878. The engine is a high compression 1275. it is a straight bolt-on fit. Pro is it spins faster so a quick start and uses less amps. The link above is the starter I got and who I bought it from. £61.

Thank you for the information above and the link.
Searching 'e' bay the starter motor in your link above does not appear to be available this side of the pond.
That does not mean it is not available but just that I have not found a source of that particular starter motor.

Re: hi torque starter motor
Hi
I have seen some information about fitting Isuzu (and Honda) starter motors in other places (credit to 'geezer').
These are USA models:
Honda Passport 1994 - 1996
Isuzu Amigo 1989 - 1994
Isuzu Pickup 1988 - 1995
Isuzu Rodeo 1991 - 1997
Isuzu Trooper II 1989 - 1988
Or equivalents in other markets.
In the case of the Isuzu's it is the one fitted to 2.6L petrol engines.
They are often available quite cheaply from vehicle dismantlers.
In Australia, where I am, the starter that fits the A-series is fitted to the Holden Rodeo 2.6.
