Dear All - A mystery for a rainy day!
We have a round smiths heater on our 1962 Morris. The lever at the bottom appears to be missing, which we presume would have controlled air flow direction. If you put your hand inside, you can move the door open or shut, but it looks like there was originally an external control lever.

Can anyone tell me:
Should there be an external control lever?
If so, what is it called?
Can a replacement be obtained? We've had a look online at the normal places and can't see it listed!

The heater works really well so we don't want or need to replace it. We haven't looked at it until now as we found the missing connection whilst doing something else!

There is a control assy - air flow (with knob) for this application.

The control cable with knob is Pt No: ADA3598.

The control cable mounting bracket which attaches to the parcel tray is Pt No: ADA3539 and is secured by two bolts and nuts Part Nos: PMZ0308 & FNZ103.

Whether you will be able to obtain new parts I do not know.

It looks as if your parcel shelf is missing. As Phil has already said, the control cable for the vent it attached to the parcel shelf so was probably discarded with that
In order to reinstate it all, you'll have to do some searching around the various parts specialists. Somebody will have the parts you need no doubt - either new or secondhand.

As a last resort, you could adapt a solid (not strands) choke cable and fabricate a bracket.

Sounds like we might try to source the right cable but make up some kind of bracket in place of where the parcel shelf attachment would have been.

As ManyMinors says, you'll likely find the parts if you're prepared to pick up the phone and try some of the Minor specialists out there - you may need to try beyond Ware's, ESM and David Manners though!!! I would certainly try that before you start fabricating parts. I've attached a couple of pics of our '62 car with the same set up for you to see. And regarding the function of the flap you've identified - it doesn't affect the distribution of air from the heater, but rather allows you to let fresh air from outside the car in to the heater, which was something the earlier recirculating heater didn't have. It helps demist the windows a tiny bit better if it's open, and you get a little bit of ram effect at speed, but nothing like on the 'proper' fresh air heater that came out around 1964.

Phil - that’s the cable for a heater valve on a post ‘64 car with the later heater. I suspect it could be modified to fit, but the length is different, as is the bracket (important if it’s to be mounted on the correct parcel shelf) and knob.

I realise it is not the original item but it will do the job. As the OP does not have a parcel shelf the additional length may be of benefit. If you cannot get the original items this is the next best thing. The inner and outer cable can be shortened to suit if necessary and it comes with the knob mounting bracket.

Indeed, as I said, but I think you would still agree that it’s worth pointing out if parts are actually not the correct ones, even if they will do the job with modification, Phil. Your post suggested they were the correct parts.

There was no suggestion that they are/were the original parts but that they are all the parts that will be required to do the job and get the heater fresh air flap working.
There is a choice here - a working fresh air flap with parts that will do the job or wait till the correct original item(s) comes available which may take some time to achieve.
Unless the OP fits a parcel tray having the original fresh air control is unachievable.
