Pickup Project (Aka. Projekt Katy)
Ladies and Gentlemen, I welcome you to this thread about "Projekt Katy"
It is a joint venture between myself and "KalKat" and when its done it will be something special! We don't want to give the aims of the project away at this early stage but you will get to see what happens when it happens.
It was purchased from RayofLeamington a few months ago and this is the first chance we have had to do anything serious with it.
Unfortunately I forgot to get any before pictures - prehaps you could help Ray?, or any until Sunday come to that!
Anyway, on Thursday it was a more or less complete pickup and here are some photos to show our progress up to Sunday...
On Friday we started the job at about 3pm and removed the engine - which was promply sold and collected on Saturday!
On Saturday the cab back, the sides, and the bed floor were removed which left us with this on Sunday morning:
And the remains of a pickup abely modelled by Kalkat
At this point I would like to share the "repair" to the rear chassis...
Constructed of box section and some rather heavy duty angle iron!
At this point all appeared to be well except for that bodge and this one...
So we took the front suspension off, unbolted the cab (and ground a few bolts off) and we ended up with
We lifted the cab on to a trailer and tipped it up to asses underneath
And other than right at the back its all pretty reasonable, but the chassis needs a little work
Everything else was loaded on to the trailer and taken to the "field" for temporary storage under a tarp
And its sharing the field with these reprobates...
It may be a few weeks before any more progress is made so don't expect regular updates!

Re: Pickup Project (Aka. Projekt Katy)
excellent start to what will be a long and interesting story, keep us all updated no matter how small and insignificant an event, thought, part, quirk, joke or even if you feel down in the dumps with it all. It makes you feel better if you share the highs and lows. I have to say ,its not looking bad at all, then again that's coming from me, so that probably doesn't help. Great project choice.

Re: Pickup Project (Aka. Projekt Katy)
Other than that rear part on the chassis its not too bad... It looks like it could be welded up in an hour or so!
But because of that rear section we are wondering whether its worth trying to find another chassis
But some extra chassis work will be required for what is planned

Re: Pickup Project (Aka. Projekt Katy)
It's sad to see it stripped - i had a lot of fun driving that wreck around (although for its last year on the road it was much less of a wreck)
* except for the back part as I didn't have time which is why it's still a pigs breakfast.
as for the chassis - i can only recommend that you replace the lot with something decent! The orrible box section stuff is not the only thing you need to be concerned about - I rebuilt the section in between the cab and the box section, and although it is now 'solid' it is only made of repairs. The biggest concern was that I had to rebuild the rear spring tubular cross member on one side by welding it up (it wasn't holed but only because the rot was so thick..) The repairs removed a lot of the rot but it's not exactly a 'long term' repair to weld up rotted parts of the tube. If you're intending to make a nice vehicle at the end it would be a shame to need a new chassis in 'X' years time.
i should think so!! I spent more than 3 days welding up the Cab* as it was a total rotbox. From memory I did both sills and a lot on the inner wings. I struggled wuith the inner wing dome sections - I should have replaced instead of repairing as that would have taken less time and a much neater result. And other than right at the back its all pretty reasonable

Re: Pickup Project (Aka. Projekt Katy)
and Lands End to Orkney a couple of times (the LEO) - albeit missing the start on the second trip as I didn't manage to weld up the cab and chassis in 6 days.. it took 7 days on top of the day job and when leaving day arrived my insurance paperwork hadn't arrivedIt got Ray to the National at Sparkford
If I hadn't been welding until the last minute, I would have had time to collect the imaginary paperwork that [##] hadn't managed to post in the 2 weeks I'd had the policy, but all's well that ends well.
After the 2nd LEO she has also 'weathered' a year in Orkney - doing what pick ups should do (carrying a dog on the passenger seat and scavenged firewood in the back) before returning to the midlands on the way to new (current) owners
It didn't make it to many other rallies - having only 2 seats wasn't ideal for the 3 of us. Hopefully the buzby van will fare better, but now I want the nicely sorted 4 seater van from Serbia instead!
History lesson over now as the next phase is already underway in the hands of the new owners ;-)
ps - I hope you've still got my torch Matt ;-) are you coming to the web rally?
