Post by horrace »

when idling the engine on my pick up gives off a ear popping low humming noise, i can tolerate it but the wife in moaning. i fitted noise killer sound proofing on the bulkhead and floors and i have a carpet set. engine is standard other than larger inlet manifold and exhaust. the noise dissappears as soon as revs pick up?

Sounds like retarded ignition timing. Check that and also that the weights in the distributor are free moving.

Is there perhaps something touching the body - from the engine ? Perhaps exhaust where it passes out of the engine bay ? Engine steady perhaps too tight? Engine mounts gone soft ??

Double blade fan instead of single? Meet wife at destination?

i have played around with the engine steady so perhaps its too tight, whats the spec for tightening the engine steady?
i gues i could just leave the wife behind at least that cuts half the noise out

Steady bar (and gearbox restraint cable) should just be nipped up.

You could take the belt off to see if the noise then disappears.. could be alt bearings or just the fan swishing round - one way to find out!
