Unscrewing tie rod end!!
I've used a tie rod end splitter and separated it but now try as hard as I can I can't unscrew it from the rack.. I've tried a big adjustable spanner on the rod end with a smaller in the groove in the rack and tried heat.. Just wondering what else I could try??

Re: Unscrewing tie rod end!!
Hello Molly,
I'm guessing it's difficult to see under the crud, but there is a locknut against the trackrod end that needs to be slackened first. Easier if you put ball joint back into the steering rod with the nut on a couple of threads, this will hold the tie rod while undoing the locknut without having to hold the tie rod from turning.

Yes that's it - slacken the locknut etc BEFORE breaking the taper joint. Release oil and heat - never fails.......

Do you guys have a pic of said locknut? Maybe I'm blind but I just can't see what you're talking about its a 1960 1000 I don't know if they changed this setup?
Re: Unscrewing tie rod end!!
Always a locknut hard up against the end of the track rod end..... Wire brush it - you will see a hex - that's the nut, the tre doesn't have a hex - usually just two flats.

Re: Unscrewing tie rod end!!
When you have found the locknut use a good fitting spanner and a big hammer and hit it in a clockwise direction oops edited. Slacken it off then wind it back against the TRE before removing the TRE. You then screw the new TRE up to the locknut and pinch the locknut tight

NO - hit it in a CLOCKWISE direction to take it away from the tre........
