replaceing parcel shelf
Hi there folks,
Has anyone replaced the parcel shelf alone as I'm toying with the idea of doing mine but the bar is in perfect "as new" condition so I was wondering how easy is it to just replace the parcel shelf to the existing "bar"

It's very easy. Just use leatherette to recover it and pipe lagging from the DIY to replace the old foam on the crash pad.

Have a look at how the shelf is connected to the bar, I have a feeling it's riveted in some way and not so easy.

MarkyB,
Mine was not riveted-the shelf was just resting on the L-shaped bar and held in place by the crash pad. I'm not sure if it supposed to be like that.

Easy job. Mine (1967) was riveted on the bar. Just drilled the rivets out and used very small nuts and bolts to reattach. Newton Commercial has detailed install directions on their site. The new shelf was a huge improvement in looks.

bufferzone, do you have a link to that site? I went to their website but couldn't find anything about installations.

Katy,
If you select an item on the Newton Commercial site there is a yellow 'Fitting Instructions Click Here' button below the 'Description'.

Re: replaceing parcel shelf
I replaced mine alone, quite straightforward. I did have the luxury of using the original as a template to check the sizes.
I seem to remember that someone on here mentioned that the shelf is attached to the bar and bulkhead with Bifurcated Rivets. I used zinc plated nuts and bolts to fit mine

Re: replaceing parcel shelf
No nuts and bolts are required. They are simply riveted together. Bifurcated rivets originally but I used pop rivets on mine with plain washers to spread the load.

Re: replaceing parcel shelf
thanks ManyMinors - nuts and bolts would be easier for me however as I have all required tools to do the job (apart from right size nuts and bolts currently!). pop rivets would mean I need to buy a new tool, and I'm already getting complaints at how many I have

Re: replaceing parcel shelf
The design of parcel shelves varied over the years, as did the horizontal bars they were attached to. As you will see in this thread, I used bi-furcated rivets on my SII, but nuts and bolts - with washers to help protect the shelf material - would be easier: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=65935&p=604424&hili ... lf#p604424
