Re: 1949 MM Gear Nob
I am not sure what that knob fits,my car originally had the flathead motor ,but it was replaced a very long time ago maybe even in the 50's when the first 948 engines came out.the rest of the car is completely original .

Re: 1949 MM Gear Nob
Name on the list Willem, Have you finished the car yet?
The gear knob in your photo has larger serrations around the edge and embossed numbers, so maybe there were two designs. As I said previously the MM lever had a metric thread and the 803 would have had a unf thread so unless the gear knobs had rubber inserts they would not be interchangeable

Re: 1949 MM Gear Nob
Mike, pictures of my 1951 gear Knob are below. You can just make out the hexagonal depression where the brass ferrule used to be.[frame][/frame][frame][/frame][frame][/frame]
The nut in the picture is the base locking nut. After you said that the early ones were metric, I tried a metric bolt - nearest match is M8, but this only turns less than half a turn. Looks like I have another size - I don't have enough sample UNF bolts.
Do you know what thread sizes the Metric and UNF fittings were?
Regards, George.

Re: 1949 MM Gear Nob
MM gear knob is M8 x 1mm pitch, the same as the manifold studs. There should be a list of A Series threads on the MMOC message board.
George, the MM gear knob did not have the outline around the gear numbers

Re: 1949 MM Gear Nob
To find the right M8x1 bolts and nuts, I used the local Massey Ferguson dealer, in my area they are on stock.
I think it will be the same in the UK.

Are there any more updates on when the first batch will be ready?
Keen to hear how things are going.

The knob you show is from an earler late 1930s or early 40s Morris such as a Morris 10/4 Series 3.I have used one on my MM as well.

Re: 1949 MM Gear Nob
Bryan, thanks for the information. I'll keep that one in a safe place (currently using the car on road tests with no gear-knob) and wait for my hand-made repro to fit (should feel a lot better, in the hand, than a threaded bit of metal!)sparesman wrote:George

Re: 1949 MM Gear Nob
I can't see any of the original pictures either - I think they have been removed when the website was restructured/moved.

Re: 1949 MM Gear Nob
On the bottom photo the one at bottom left is the Morris 8E and 10M solid bakelite version which is the right shape for an MM. The one at centre right looks like the solid rubber ones which the club via Mike Perry had mad a few years back and of which we still have some left. The mould for these came from the bakelite 8E knob hence the same part number engraved underneath.
