For the colour I've decided to change completely and go for almond green as a wedding present for Lora (wife to be) as green is her beyond a doubt favourite colour! Whatever interior goes with that!!

A few more questions, what grade sandpaper shall I use for flattening back the paint that's on there already?

And any tips for rust proofing the boot/floor/underbody?

I'm going to wire brush the underseal off the boot and underbody, the floor has red oxide then hammerite on it which I may just touch up, any help hugely appreciated, keep it coming!

Day #9 - soundtrack: John Mayer, Kathryn Roberts. 3 hours done.

So today, the labourius task of removing underseal began, as I haven't got the car on its side yet, I'm starting with the boot and the wings so I can investigate what welding needs there and give myself some practice at having a go at those parts!

This is how things looked at the start:[frame][/frame]

After removing the wires running to the tail lights, and the bumper stop bars (these were both getting in the way and I decided I would do a more thorough job with them gone, I'll worry about how the hell I put them back afterwards) I did a fair bit of underseal removal, I used a wire cup brush on an electric drill, works well until it gets clogged up then it's not so great, so I'm still experimenting with the best method....

Here are some holes I've found, in an area which appears to be prone to rust as ESM have panels to patch it up with for £4.95 ish each![frame][/frame][frame][/frame]

One quick question, when I'm replacing those little bits, shall I cut out that rusty metal completely or patch over it? After grinding back the rust, and kurusting it all?

You should cut out the rust and replace with new metal, cut out back to sound metal and then idealy butt weld new metal in or. If you are not confident with this start with a small overlap ( around 1/4") and seal both it afterwards, weld through primer on the overlap is also a good idea.

For the floor paint I am not a big fan of hammerite, I reckon the best stuff is epoxy, some of agricultural paints like teamac are also really good.

For the topcoat what paint are you using?

Day #10 3 hours done. No music!
Today began with the removal of dashboard fascia:[frame][/frame]
These dudes came off with a 6mm socket[frame][/frame]
Next bit was all the switches and the metal bit behind it[frame][/frame]
After that I decided the heater control and the steering column had to go....the only thing left is my fuel pump cut off switch that I'll have to remove with dead screw remover drill bits as they are round![frame][/frame]

Then off came the seatbelts[frame][/frame]
Loki was extremely bored[frame][/frame]

To finish off I had a little wire brush investigate on the rear passenger side wing, found some holes and terrible terrible welding.[frame][/frame]

Today my shiny new engine crane arrived, Mondays job will be first assembling it and then hopefully pulling out the engine and the gearbox! Can't wait!! I'm currently still on schedule for October 1st, let's keep going!!

Day #11 - 2 1/2 hours done!

Today was engine removal day, I'm so so so happy with myself for having done this, I know it's a job a lot of you do regularly but it's my first time ever and a few weeks ago I'd of never dreamed I'd be able to do it!

That's my best man/ best friend Jake helping there, it's his first duty as best man!

I've found this hole in the gearbox covered with tape:[frame][/frame]

Finally, I couldn't resist a stupid pose.....I've owned this tshirt for years.....[frame][/frame]

Next question, now you've seen my garage size, anyone got any genius ideas of how I can tip Morris on his side???

Good investment, an engine crane. Money well spent.
It'll be one less expense when you're restoring your next Minor!
You have to have more than one (when you can afford it) or she'll get lonely!

I once made a wooden frame with swivveling wheels ,available at any DIY shop.
Maybe you can put the car on that frame and push it back inside....
I would advise to buy not too small wheels.Regards

That sounds like a good idea, to put the stripped shell on a wheeled frame, providing you have a good flat area outside the garage (not full of pot holes), then just wheel it out to work on and back in when you're done for that day.
Perhaps someone on here has one they could loan or sell you?..............

Not sure that is a standard BMC colour - the nearest to it that is would be Almond Green. Here's a photo to compare. Whatever colour it is, it looks pretty good [frame][/frame]

Hi all,

Just a quick request to anyone reading this!

If any of you have some pictures of your engine painted, out of the car, so I can see what colour where that would be grand!

Part of next months schedule is painting engine!! Not going to recondition it yet, not time but as I now have the engine crane I can do that whenever!!

The factory painted the engine complete after assembly, in addition to my picture the manifold and dynamo would also have been fitted before painting. The only bits that were masked were the plates on the rocker cover. The fan and pulley were painted yellow for safety. Many people, even concours owners don't paint nuts bolts and ancillaries, but that is personal taste and absolutely up to each owner to decide.[frame][/frame]

We used to have a Y reg morris marina in a similar colour, I think it was Tara Green (matalic).

Day #12 - 2 hours done. Soundtrack - Mad Dog Mcrea

Today was the start of removing waxoyl, old paint and rust from the boot, wings and engine bay to determine what to weld and in what order. Rolling over of the car has been sorted and will take place within the week!

Thanks again to all who answered my questions, plenty more to come. I'm off to visit MTR restorations in Chagford tomorrow (they advertise in minor matters) to have a chat about things! Chagford is 10 mins away from my house!

Also got a whole weekend from Friday afternoon to Monday morning in the garage booked for the end of this month where I'm staying I'm the coach house above it while my fiancée and daughter are away, late nights and early mornings are on the cards!

Looking at your last photo, I'm hoping you're going to refit your original engine, as even with the small horsepower output from it, it will still be more powerful than the 'One doggypower' unit you have installed at present!!
