Goodbye taxdisc - or not!

Today will be the last day you can get a tax disc as they will be abolished tomorrow (1st October). BUT, if displaying tax discs is no longer a legal requirement does this mean we can display a 50s/60s tax disc without getting into trouble? If so, I shall be displaying one that expired in 1963 when my Minor was made!

If I could get my suction tax disc holder to stick to the windscreen for more than two minutes then I would display my 1952 disc

I renewed my wife's car tax in the middle of September (to end of September 2015..) and they had already stopped issuing tax disks - which seems normal as they are defunct from 1st October.
Apparently DVLA ran out of disks well ahead of the deadline so had to issue some of the ones starting in September printed on white paper..

I do wonder if the law has actually changed, or just whether the policing of it has changed.
Current law states that it's an offence for "failing to display a valid ### disc"
So with no disc to display is wifey in breach of the law from tomorrow (although trying to be law abiding, and not going to get done for it)?

You'll all be fine, it's business as usual. You continue to pay for VED as before, just not receive a piece of paper to display in the window. I used to display an age-related taxdisc in the usual place on my 1961 Minor, and placed the official disc behind the rear-view mirror. Never had an issue, even at MOT time. Even if the law governing 'failure to display a valid disc' is still on the statute books, it won't be enacted on. There are many laws still in force that aren't enforced. The only thing everybody needs to be reminded of, is the law that came into force a year or two ago, that requires every 'taxed' vehicle MUST be insured. So if your insurance lapses, you must inform DVLA and they'll suspend the VED on the affected vehicle. This must be done on so called 'tax-free' historic vehicles, too. If you don't, you risk a £1000 fine.

See - Poplargreg site - they do all the reproductions of tax discs all at competitive prices !

am going to get my cars first issued disc and display it as l have been informed it should not be illegal to do so !

I wonder how much the government will raise now you have to tax again a car you purchase that already is taxed, or did I get that wrong?

Kind of .. You buy a car now with no tax. When you buy the car you as the new owner has to tax it.... The previous owner then applies for the refund of what they have left rather than selling with for example... 4 months tax left. Argument is all about if you sell on Oct 2nd, then you as new owner have to tax from Oct as I understand it, but old owner only gets refund for whats left of remaining whole months. That means that if you are being picky the car can be taxed twice for October.

Think that's how it works. I'm all for less paperwork. Police can check by number plate recognition if you are insured and you don't have to have those documents in your car displayed, so it makes sense that posting out a bit of paper to say you are taxed is no longer needed.

These are the suppliers to the Heritage Motor Centre, at Gaydon, but for some reason the museum prices are £1 lower than going direct to the supplier.
To get DVLA approved repro Tax Discs is going to cost me about £75-£80 on cars that have free VED

Hi,
I use Earlswood reproduction tax discs (link below), as they use the original perforated round tax disc paper, printed on both sides just as it would have been. They are excellent quality and only cost £28 including postage.
I have been displaying a copy of my original 1963 tax disc in my Moggy for ages, it is perfectly legal.
