Romain green paint code
Hi all,
After years of grinding welding and filling I'm nearly at the stage of sending my 1950 lowlight off to the painters. I have been able to locate the ICI paint code for Romain green, but it seems like many mixers won't mix to that code. Is there a more modern code of the equivalent colour? Or a modern alternative?
Thanks!
Will

Will,
The BMC code for Romain Green is GN27 and was used on the Minor from 1964 on. Is that the colour you are planning to use? This is a link to a colour swatch, but not sure how accurate it really is:

Re: Romain green paint code
Thanks for finding the link, although I'm not 100 percent convinced that's the right colour. Romain Green was used between October 1948 and September 1950, and seems a much deeper colour. The code ICI code is: I0095 http://www.minormania.com/feature.php?catid=-1&id=1994IslipMinor wrote:Will,

I believe, that there is a more modern Renault colour which is very similar to the Morris original.
Cheers,

A good paint shop will match it for you.

Re: Romain green paint code
Most paint shops have disposed of the colour code formulae. Romain Green is listed as BMC code N/A (before Austin/Morris merger), ICI code 0095, Used from 1948-50.
The best that you can usually do is colour match it to some hidden panel on the car which has not weathered too much, a bit difficult if you are doing a complete strip down restoration

I'll have a look over the car and see if I can find a section of original unfaded paint. Failing that I was considering getting some coach enamel mixed up to the original colour, which I could then get matched for 2k?
Cheers,

Re: Romain green paint code
The best place for original paint is behind the glovebox where it meets the speedo or inside the boot roof (not the lid) These places usually excape unless a previous total bare metal respray has been done before.

Re: Romain green paint code
Not the easiest of areas to take to a paint shop for mixing the paint tho...
Inside a door behind the trim panel may be handier as doors unbolt and are portable. On my Romain Green lowlight I taped over one of the wheel wells and instructed the shotblaster to leave that alone so I had a good shiny unfaded paint sample to take to the paint shop. Helps if your car has its original body coloured wheels though...
Many decent paint suppliers now have a computerised scanning system to match original paint samples which can be quite successful.

Re: Romain green paint code
VW used a colour very close to Romain Green (some say the same) on one of their Transporters:youngcamper wrote:I believe, that there is a more modern Renault colour which is very similar to the Morris original.
Friesen green, code L6T.

Re: Romain green paint code
Hi All,
I thought I should update you on where I am on this. I ordered up a sample of VW Friesen green (L6T), sadly it's nowhere near the same colour, being much brighter and less turquoise than the original.
I had managed to get some enamel paint mixed up which provided a reasonable match, but not in 2K. In the end I managed to find some original paint on one of the wheels under the hubcap. I popped down to a local company called rainbow paint who have a specialist who is going to match the colour by hand.
I'll keep you all updated as to how this goes, and if I get a reusable paint code for this.
Thanks.
Will

Re: Romain green paint code
I've just come across this old thread with no final update from the original poster.
My current low-light project is Romain (Romaine) Green and the previous owner had paint mixed up for it in 2006 (5 Litres at a cost of £318.85 ex VAT).
The code used was Rover Romain Green 030-0095.
As my car had been brush painted (badly), I will also have to try to obtain some more paint.
In the past it had also been resprayed in Almond Green (just like my Empire Green Traveller).
Regards,
George.

Re: Romain green paint code
I agree with Richard (IslipMinor) that the original BMC code for Romain Green is GN27 - although the years he quotes for it are incorrect.
I have a colour sample of it - which probably won't photograph well - and it is not dissimilar to the Dark Green in his posting header. Just a little lighter. I also have a formulation for it but probably no use, as the base colours available now will not be the same .

This is the hand-painted "Rover Romain Green"
George.
I'll see if there are any panels, that can be removed, with the original paint on them, to get a computer match done.George.

Re: Romain green paint code
I just contacted ICI (original suppliers) and they sold me small pots. Amazing match for Thames Blue and Mist Green. Might be worth a try for Romaine?

Re: Romain green paint code
Hello Rob,
Romain seems to be spelled in two different way, one with the "E" and one without.
I lifted the following images from the tinternet This particular vehicle is still in the DVLA database, first registered November 1948 and has got a current MOT!
Well done to whoever has it, hopefully a fellow member.
Regards,
George
P.S. been using loads of the "black stuff" over the past weekend.

The correct spelling is without the "E".

Re: Romain green paint code
Hi
My car was found in a shed and had apparently been there for some 20 odd years. This agrees with the tax discs passed on when purchasing it. It looks green, is pitted over around half of the panels, some of the verticals are good but that doesn't matter as I shall not respray it, I like it as is. I have gone over the pits with petroleum jelly to preserve them, but it is garaged anyway, of course.
BUT I recently got the car record from DVLA and the record describes it as "BLUE"!!!
I did have a small can mixed against a removable sample and this a reasonable match, just to do the bumper joining panels which were badly rusted. The match is not quite right, but close enough.
The DVLA record also says it is an october 1950 car, when I thought it was september.
Colin
