Remove the rear wings - then start cutting away the rotten metal till you get back to decent steel you can weld to. There's no fixed pattern to it......every car is different.

Is the wood still fitted to the car? If it is its a great refernece point so you get the arches in the correct place. The inner wing is spot welded to the chassis of the car, theres a good chance it will have had mig or oxy welding done on it in the past also. You can buy a spot weld drill to remove them and a grinder obviously!

Have a look at Neils superb restoration, page 5 shows the arches cut out.

Theres another excellent traveller restoration on an extremely rotten car from Taupe, it would be well worth studying his pictures. Last page of his resto shows some of the inner wings,

Depending on how bad the inner wing is this panel is available to repair were it attaches to the wood, Ive used this on my car

Post some pics up of your car or better still start a restoration thread!

Hi and thanks again for the reply's, the wood was totally shot so ive taken it all off , the near side inner looks ok but the off side needs doing so was going to replace both .
The car belonged to my farther in law, one owner from new, id like to get it done so he can see it has it was when he first bought it, he's 88 years old now, dont think its a car the wife will ever sell, so i need to get it right, no rush and expecting to spend lots to get it right.
I've never welded, so i might have to pay through the nose for most things, and get advise for the rest.

You didn't tell us it was a Traveller at the beginning.......
Edit - I didn't read the title - apologies offered. Roy

My sincere apologies - I just didn't read the title. Mea culpa. Although I have never done this - I think I would fit the timber first and then fit the rear wings - inner and outer to suit the timber. Otherwise you could be struggling to manoeuvre the awkward timber assembly over a perhaps not quite right inner wing.............

Well worth buying the Ray Newell Traveller book - not cheap, but the section by Steve Forman of Woodies is very good. He recommends trial fitting the new wood before the final welding of the inner wings. I think this is absolutely essential, I've heard of a couple of people who have done all the welding, got to the wood fitting stage and found that the flange isn't in the right place for an accurate fit.

^^^^^ Just get the book from the local Library!! I had several Minor books out for 20 years continuously... I bet now I've handed them in they will just scrap them. Someone from South Lanarkshire may like to go get them out - I think they went 'home' to East Kilbride branch - but can be reserved online and delivered to your local SL Library foc.
