I have, for sale, a 1275cc Marina engine, complete with clutch, 5 speed Toyota Celica Gearbox, Gearbox cross member and propshaft, all taken from a 1970 1000 van. I have the documentation for the gold seal engine which has an unleaded head. I'm looking for £1,500 ono

Hi,
I may be interested, just a few questions,
How did you fit a marina engine to a toyota gearbox? or was this a common bodge years ago?

If you took it from a van, did it have those ginormous gpo wing mirrors?

Is the propshaft the same lenth for a salon?

would you take £1,300.

Toyota gearbox to A series engine for Midgets & Sprites was a recognised conversion a couple of decades ago, not a bodge.
Special bellhousings were made to facilitate mating them together.
Dellow in Australia was one manufacturer, possibly Frontline over here too.

Hello, I think someone has already answered the first questions, I'm not too sure if the van layout is exactly the same length as the saloon, although I'm sure that someone in the club will know the answer. No I would not take £1300. Cheers Simon

Charles Ware was one company that used to do the Celica gearbox on the Marina 1275. They still stock all the bits (clutch plates etc.) to service them.

I have the same setup on my car and it works very well. Nice robust and positive gearbox. But they are getting hard to find these days so most new 5 speed mods are Ford.

The propshaft is common to all versions of the Minor - saloon, convertible, traveller, van and pick-up. The part no. is AAA 3747.

Do you have the fitting instructions for the T50? I have a copy from Minor Mania dating from the late 1980's and also a copy of the Toyota parts manual for the later version of the T50, with the flat gear lever mounting. From the picture I cannot see which version yours is. The earlier version has the gear lever mount angled backwards, a smaller bearing for the primary shaft, and the 3rd motion shaft (mainshaft) has different output splines. This means that the primary shaft, main gearbox casings and 3rd motion shaft are not interchangeable, but most of the other parts are.

Bodge? Where do you get that idea from?

The Toyota T50 gearbox is by far the best 5-spd box that can be retrofitted into a Minor. The change is precise, neat and with a shorter gear lever (I have welded the top of a standard Minor gear lever on to the T50), it beats many so-called 'quickshifts' by a mile. I am not exaggerating at all - if anyone would like to try a T50 conversion in a Minor, just pop over to Islip, near Oxford and see for yourself!

The Ford T9 is a big, heavy, clunky box with a very long throw on the gear change by comparison. Durable, maybe, but distinctly agricultural by comparison.

The Toyota T50 conversion kit originated in Australia from Rooster Racing, and was sold in the UK by Minor Mania, in Mill Hill, London from the 1980's, when the T50 was still very available, unlike now, when they are very difficult to find in a complete usable condition. Minor Mania still had parts around in the late 1990's, but nothing more recently. We bought the complete T50 box and conversion kit with the 1380 engine 20+ years and 60,000+ miles ago, and fitted new bearings, seals and gaskets before fitting it into the car. Toyota UK still supply some spares for the T50, and as the rear oil seal had a very slight weep, I took the opportunity to fit a complete gasket and seal set 3 years ago, as a precaution when the engine and gearbox were already out of the car. That is the only spare part that has been required in that time.

The part that is very hard to find is the aluminium bellhousing, which is the key part of the conversion. Not sure if the T50 conversion for the Marina engine uses the same bellhousing as the rest, and changed the engine backplate to the non-Marina/Ital version, or if the Marina bellhousing was unique to the Marina?

If anyone has or knows of a T50 to A-Series (non-Marina) bellhousing that is available, please let me know, as it is the only part that I do not have as a spare for our T50 conversion.

I would love to drive a Morris with this set up as I would imagine it is quite superior than the original set up? :)

There is little difference between the Minor and Sprite engines as regards parts required for the conversion.

Between the Toyota 5 speed and the Ford Type 9 conversion CS Auto Classics offered the Ford 2000E 4 speed conversion which was a good conversion. I had one of those in my Minor and having synchromesh on 1st gear was the best part of it.

Phil,

In its day, the 2000E 'box was seen as the gold standard, by which all other gearboxes were compared (almost all unfavourably!). Quaife still offer all sorts of variants of it today - synchro, dog engagement, straight-cut etc. Not much seems to have changed with its reputation.

Sorry folks, I seem to have forgotten to mention that I only want to sell the lot (engine & complete drivetrain) as it all came from the same vehicle and I already have a minor which has been converted. Thanks to all for the favourable comments and details about the Toyota box (which is the flat topped gearstick variety) I must say that the type 9 in the saloon that I have is not as good as the Toyota box. The clutch mounting bracket on the Toyota is far superior and you don't have to shorten the handbrake with the Toyota box. Cheers Simon

When Wares did my Traveller I enquired about the Toyota box, but they were like rocking horse manure. Got the type 9 instead and been very happy with it.

I am grateful for your feedback Steve. I've had both and in my opinion the Celica box is far superior. I don't know why I'm called Newbie on this website, probably because (as you can tell) I'm not brilliant with computers. I actually joined the club in 2008 and I've had 3 vans and 2 saloons over the years. I don't think my pension will ever stretch to a traveller. Cheers Simon
