Purists look away now

Post by Admin »

This is what happens when Herbie reverses into a parked Traveller at speed!

The more you look at this, the more you recognise the work that's gone in, whether you approve or not, Note how the front cab roof is actually Minor rather than VW, to ensure the roof join is right for a Traveller, and the fabrication around the B pillars to get the timber to align right. An amazing piece of work.

I think that looks great! I'm not a Beetle enthusiast and I wouldn't want to own it but that was a huge amount of work and the end result looks very good 8)

The builder is a VW guy rather than Minor, but he's promised me an article on it for future use.

So you have the worst of both cars. Gives a new meaning to reverse engineering.

I like it, but if only he'd fitted a 1275 A-series under the bonnet...

The roof line looks perfect - I'm keen to know which portion of the roof was altered and how - brilliant.

Ah looking at it now - the VW had a styling rib above the gutter line.

Must admit air cooled engines are for bikes but if you were going to that much trouble why fit an A series engine? :-?

Very nice conversion job. 8) Be interesting to see how it compares to a standard or 1275-engined Traveller, in terms of overall driveability, practicality, economy, performance, etc.

As a general rule I don’t like to see old cars heavily modified. However I must say I really like that! I do love Moggies and Bugs.
A bad day with my Volksie still beats a good day at work!

it is wrong of me to be more curious of the convertible in the background?

Anyone recognise it?

It's a 356B. Lovely. There's a Covin version lives near me that I see now and then, just as 'bite the back of your hand pretty', much quicker with a tuned Beetle lump, and a fraction of the price.

I thought a Porsche, but couldn't think of the number. The sidelights under the headlamps confused me as they didn't seem to stick out enough.
All the pictures I found seemed to have a couple of inches of chrome showing on the sidelights... I guess it must be a really early one compared to the images I found.

Covin (as opposed to CoviD!) were a kitcar builder copying both 356's and 911's (and a couple of other '9' models too, maybe a 959 if memory serves?) and really pressed Porsche's buttons as the 356's were very close in looks, they even started selling Porsche badging for the kits before the German company eventually said enough and sued. I'm not sure if its an apocryphal tale or not but I'm sure I remember hearing that the copies were so close you could used a Covin 911 wing on a Porsche car!

I notice the rear Traveller wings have been 'rolled' to match the VW Beetle fronts - a neat touch.

You have to admire the skill and craftsmanship that has gone into making it but then you think, all that work and you've still got the engine in the wrong end :D

Someone has real wit. It screams fun, and will irk the beard-brigade just enough. Gotta say I like it... a lot. And normally I'd run a mile from the idea of a VW/Moggy b*****d-child.

Agreed, needs the engine at the other end, and now finds the worst aspects of both a VW and a Moggy. Don't fancy a clattery VW engine in the rear of a Traveller, it must be LOUD. The rims seem misplaced, one set of wide-steels would retain the look. Yet, I'm nitpicking here - the standard of work is stupendous.

I'd take that home in a heart-beat.
