Minors globally - where were they exported to?

Post by cyrus »

I know there are a lot of Minors in the UK and Sri Lanka, also a fair few in New Zealand , Holland, some in France and the USA, but where were the main export markets? Is there any data on surviving cars abroad or are there any owners clubs in countries you might not expect?
A recent post about importing a Minor from Israel to the UK made me wonder if there are Minors in such places as Africa, Eastern Europe, Latin America, etc. I would imagine ESM have some interesting data as I think they are willing to post spare parts almost anywhere.

I'm not aware of an exact list but it will certainly be a lot of countries. You have to remember in the late forties and fifties, the emphasis was on exports to help the U.K economy recover from the the war, so the vast majority of vehicles produced were exported. Initially cars would be exported complete but then as CKD cars or built up in local factories using some local parts e.g in Australia, Dublin or Molenaar.

Certainly anywhere in what was left of the empire or commonwealth would receive Minors, much of Europe and America. In the post war period, much of the world was starved of new cars, so pretty much anywhere was a potential export market.

A couple of interesting snippets from one of Ray Newell's books showing export numbers and key markets for Nuffield/BMC.

Here’s a more granular breakdown based on Morris Motors spare part division markups.

Norway had to pay more for their parts than Sweden despite being closer.

For detail and something you can refer to at leisure, can I suggest the book, the worlds supreme small car by Paul Skilleter ?
