With a negative earth, you can fit any modern car radio / sound system. Usual places for mounting the unit are under the dashboard or in a glovebox. Speakers can go on the rear parcel shelf, in the doors or in the scuttle panels. The aerial is often fitted in a wing, but I have found that a roof mounted aerial gives better reception. Plan all wiring routes before you start drilling. Treat any exposed metal to prevent rust and use grommets to protect cables.

If you have a standard ignition switch then you can have the radio powered from that, in which case, do not use the radio without running the engine. This is to avoid overheating the ignition coil which could be powered permanently if the engine stopped with the points closed. Alternatively, if the radio is not switched by the ignition, remember to turn it off when leaving the car or you could flatten the battery. One option is to fit an ignition switch with an accessory position and power the radio from there.

Many units feature a detachable front panel, and this can deter theft.
