Clutch problem, Borg & Beck pressure plate

Post by MMT1968 »

Hi all,

Has anyone experienced those problems with the Borg & Beck pressure plate?

I have replaced the clutch and pressure plate and friction plate completely including the clutch release bearing (ball bearing type) in my traveller. After just 50 km drive the clutch began rattling. I pulled the engine out again and found the pressure plate the release bearing is working on at an angle like visible in the pic attached. That means the pressure plate is scrap and I got a replacement item from the supplier without any problems. It is not visible with the pressure plate lying on the work bench but if it’s mounted and torqued down to specs.
It was said by the Morris Minor Register Germamy that these kind of issues do happen more often in the last few years due to quality problems with the Borg & Beck items.
My question is now: has anyone had similar problems and an idea how this can happen but much more interesting is there any alternative to the Borg & Beck pressure plate? Is there any diaphragm type of the pressure plate I can use on a 1098 flywheel?
Just to mention, I’ve got an Ford T9-five speed conversion on a 1300 Marina engine with a modified 1098 flywheel in the car. All fits well.

Chris

The pressure plate in the picture above is not scrap it just needs to be set up correctly. It is a job you can do yourself without specialist tools.
Quality control is an issue these days not just with clutches but right across the car spares replacement spectrum.

I‘ve tried several times and all possible positions but the pressure plate came out this way always when torqued down to specs. I torqued it carefully and as evenly as possible and a bit of grease changed nothing. It seemed to me that the spring of the deeper positioned part is a bit weeker than the others. As it came out the same way always it must be a mechanical problem to my opinion.
I wonder how this can happen after just 50km of driving and as I received a replacement without any discussion I guess it’s a known problem.

The fingers that fit under the pressure pad have to be set up correctly - that is the height of each finger. There may be an underlying problem with the fingers but which is not insurmountable. Removing the pressure pad should quickly show up what is wrong.

Thanks Phil, I‘ll keep that in mind for the next time. The item has been sent to the supplier already and the replacement part will be mounted tomorrow. I‘ll see then if it’s better or not.
