Hi Alex, I will not be attending but I might see you in HolyHead for a quick chat, I usually go to my mother in-laws in Holyhead. The North Wales Talivan ( speed camera's) are lethal on A55 Anglesey so advise all that are taking part to be aware. Ive been done twice 35mph in a 30 and 44mph in a 40 all since I have been retired. Drove for over 40yrs with BT and never a stain on my licence

Maybe Jimmy can take a picture of us driving onto the ferry and Ian can take one of us getting off!

Guys,
Just to let you know the Irish Club did a 1,000 mile trip around Ireland 4 years ago. We recreated a trip that was done in 1954 where they drove the 1,000 miles around Ireland in just over 23 miles (now, we did it in 8 days, although there was talk of trying to re-try the time trial!! )
I have all the original documents / photos / route, etc., from 1954 and also the trip I organised 4 years ago if anyone wants to get some ideas??
The trip started in Dublin and pracftically went all around the edge of Ireland, passing through the majority of counties.
As a note, the Irish Club normally have @3-4 cars going up to Kilbroney, the Northern Club always kindly let us park with them on the day! (Thanks!!! )
As Chair / Sec is Irish Club, I'll inform the Irish members to see if they want to join up along the way, although we'll defo be in Kilbroney

Oops!! Meant to say the original car in 1954 did the 1,000 mile trip in just over 23 hours!! That's what I get for typing too quickly!!
I have the whole transcript done in 1954, showing milage between towns, petrol stops (which they did by taking cans of petrol in the car!), the amount of petrol used, timings between towns and even the weather on the hour!!

Wow. I'd definitely be interested in hearing more about the 1954 trip and your recreation of it.
My general plan is to start in Dublin and go anticlockwise around the whole island, finishing up in Dublin again after spending a day at the Kilbroney show. Detailed route planning is rather on-hold until after Easter because most of my time is taken up by another project at the moment.

I've just sent a blurb to Minor Matters and Minor Monthly. Hopefully we can pick up a few more participants who aren't forum regulars. I'll probably print up some flyers to take to the National too.
I notice in the latest MM there's a sponsorship form for the Million Mile Challenge. It looks like we don't need to do anything special to register for it - just get people to sponsor you, fill in the form, get "the organisers" (I guess that would be me) to sign it, and send it off with the total amount raised. Though I notice they've forgotten to say where to send it and who to make the cheque out to...

I have all of it typed out somewhere! We did the same, anti-clockwise from Dublin, we skipped Kilbroney though as the original route took us up to Donegal and then down the west coast to Limerick, onto Bandon, Waterford, Kilkenny and back to Dublin again. Let me know & I can email you most of it.
Am sending out a flyer to Irish members shortly, could include this as well to let people know.

I've now booked my ferry tickets. I would recommend anyone else planning on going over to Ireland with us for the rally do likewise in case the prices go up or they run out of space on the boat. To do so, go to http://www.stenaline.co.uk/ (note: this site doesn't work properly in Safari - I had to use Firefox), create an account, and book the following crossings. I went with the "Economy" rate which cost £150 outward and £100 return. A second person in the car will cost you an extra £18 each way. The "Flexi" rate costs £10 more each way but lets you make booking alterations and get a refund if you have to cancel.

My friend Chris has volunteered to be my co-driver. I've also given him the task of organising our evening entertainment - we're hoping to find plenty of live music venues to go to.

Any more suggestions on places to visit in Ireland? I'm working on the route and trying to incorporate as many interesting sights along the way as I can.
Anybody else thinking of coming with us? It's going to be a fun ride...

I've just been in touch with one of the Kilbroney Rally organisers who has given me a ferry discount code that brings the cost of the return trip down to just £185 and no extra charge for a second occupant! If you're coming with us, contact me for the details.
It's rather unfortunate that I've already booked my ferry on the "no cancellations" economy rate...

The chap just sent it to me when I was asking him about attending the rally - I didn't know there was a discount available or I would have used it when I booked myself. I've phoned the ferry company up and they wouldn't change me to the discounted rate because I went with the economy option.
Oh well, hopefully the new cheap rate will encourage some more participants to come along!

You should send a blurb too to the 'Irish Vintage Scene' as they would be delighted to hear about the run and maybe even run a story on it ?alex_holden wrote:I've just sent a blurb to Minor Matters and Minor Monthly.
