Tyre valve types

I just got a pair of budget tyres from a local supplier for £18 each, I have a friend that can fit them and he has done one of them with no problems. The other wheel has a larger valve hole and will not take the standard size valve! The wheel did have a valve and tyre on it before but the tyre was taken off last week and both tyre and valve thrown out!

Does anyone know if there are two sizes of valve hole on Minor wheels and where I might get a larger diameter valve?

Well I never! You learn something every day. I have alloy wheels and use a chrome plated Schrader valve which is put in from the inside and nutted up on the outside with rubber washers sealing against the wheel surface and I would think it could cover a 'range' of hole sizes (within reason)

I'll be out at the suppliers again soon for some tyres for my other car, I'll either get a bigger valve or a tube to go in the tyre. Either way it should solve my wheel problem!

I had this problem a few years ago the earlier rims have a larger hole for the valve a local tyre suplier had some as vw beetles use this size valve as well

Dont recall on what but have seen what looked like a hefty washer thats been pummeled a good un and tacked onto a rim - maybe for just the same reason ?

Hello Wishbone,

there used to be a plastic adapter available, usually from tyre depots, basically a sleeve with a flange to convert earlier wheels to later wheel size. Worth asking one or two tyre depots, particularly the older established ones.

Only for use with inner tubes.

Hello Steve,

as Wishbone said "or a tube to go in the tyre.".

I don't think that a larger valve will be available?

The Series MM wheels have larger valves than the later ones. I always point this out to the tyre fitter to make sure he has the correct size before removing the old ones. I also remove my nice shiny chrome dust caps before they get thrown across the floor.

Oops sorry hadn't checked this post for a while, I must turn notifications on! I'm glad you got it sorted out! I ended up putting a tube in and so far it's been fine, but if had known where to get the valves I would have used one!
