steering wheel paint

I got to thinking about winter jobs and thought, now i have at least a year of morris moted motering, that id do something with ,my faded steering wheel. can you pain them? or dye them? what is the best way to get it black and shiny again?

Fit a nice leather sew on 'glove' over it - make the rim less narrow - and warmer... It's a very period modification - was all the rage 50 years ago. Modern cars have much thicker rim wheels.

I like that steering wheel but too expensive and also too old for my moggy. the glove looks nice but doesnt cover the central spokes, and its those that are discoloured now...

I saw somewhere, someone resprayed their original one. White, if I recall, but proves it can be done!

I thought that all dished wheels were black. I would check if the wheel has a woodruff key or splined fitting. Close up shows spline fitting

I have not tried, but would try in your shoes, T cut on the rear of the steering wheel first, followed by black boot polish.
In fact next weekend I shall try it on my equally faded steering wheel.

Flat wheels are mottled brown or grey.

Just a word of caution to anyone thinking of painting their steering wheels.. From experience in tactile control systems, the skin exudes oils which will rapidly destruct ordinary paint finishes (and many plastics) in constant use! It would take more than an ordinary paint to withstand that, added to the extremes of temperature that it will be subject to

As we know, the Series MM/II wheels (mottled- and Morris 8 Series E carry-over?) are prone to cracking/crazing. I'm afraid I cannot remember what yours was like when I saw it, Mike, but if I remember correctly it was in good condition - mine is crazing round the areas where it meets the spokes - but it would seem regular useage of the car keeps it in good condition, along with the bakelite centre retaining its gloss finish!

As was the case, the parts-bin was raided and many steering wheels were common to many models.

The point I was making was that flat wheels were brown or grey and dished wheels were black. They are not interchangeable as the flat wheels have a Woodruff key fitting and the dished wheels are splined.
I thought that it was strange that the steering wheel on ebay was brown and dished, apart from having the wrong horn push
