ah, missed this bit (section 2) it does say 30cm.

It also says this:- section 12 http://www.motuk.co.uk/mot_appendix_c_2.htm

It is essential that repairs to corroded areas are properly carried out. Only welding is acceptable for repairs to 'prescribed areas'.
Suitable materials of appropriate gauge and thickness should be used for repairs so that
- Any plating or welding extends to a sound part of a load bearing component, and
- The repair must be virtually as strong as the original structure
So only a continuous seam weld is acceptable for patch repairs, although spot welded joints are acceptable where they originally existed.

So hopefully the MOT places will accept 'plug welding' on cars that are properly restored. I've known quite a few people use plug welding and it would be a shame if this had to be redone with non-standard seam welding on concours cars!

I think you have to choose garages carefully when taking your car for MOT!

Any car I've had tested with a missing bumpstop has never failed but an advisory has always been given.

Ahh! Welding!

Post by Merryck »

Hello there,
I have a friend, whobought a minor from a senile old man for 250 pounds, a very good deal we thought! until we looked underneath with a good light!! turns out he wasn't so senile after all! the old sod had painted the car, over all of the rust! a very nice paint job, but unfortunately paint isnt that strong!
i dont know the exact details, but basically he wants rid of it, as he has been told the work is in the region of 1,000 pounds worth. does anyone know anybody who can help? with welding experience and experience with minors?
I think that the rust is quite bad, he was fairly annoyed, but i managed to catch, main strut? and also a new subframe!
any information on ANYBODY who could do it cheap would be great, any information on it at all would be wonderful, as i'm thinking of buying it!
thanks,

Merryck

Hi Merryck,
It really depends what Minor it is and what condition the rest of the car is in. Some of them are only worth scrapping unless there's any sentimental (or just plain mental) attachment to it.
If however the rest of the car is pretty good then you can get floor, sills spring hangers etc.. all replaced for £1000 at some of the Minor centres. At other Minor centres that's about £2400!

ello merreck, if the subframe u mention is the chassis legs, i doubt if u will get anyone to do it cheap, its quite a job,on the car im restoring it also meant front floor and engine bay floor having to be replaced to have sound metal to weld too, if its really bad ,your money might be better spent on another car,try to get someone who knows moggys to asses it mate ,steve

Your friend could allways get a Mig welder and learn how to weld.

See the car in my signature?? Last August it was a wreck, fit only for scrap and as I couldn't weld it would have cost £1000's to fix, now I have a nice car with 11 months MOT- all my own work  8) :) :P :D

If I can do it, I don't see why anyone else couldnt!!
