Which one is the Ignition??

Hello,

I wonder if I can pick your collective brains?

I've just fitted a positive earth Accuspark distributor, wired the positive on the coil to the battery earth, connected the black cable from the distributor to the negative coil terminal - this really is a gripping read, but here comes the real cliff hanger....the white wire from the distributor has to connect to the ignition and I have a choice of two yellow/black wires that look very much like part of a circuit (ie they look the same) and a slightly thicker yellow wire.

My money's on the yellow one and maybe join the other two together??

I'm working on a 1963 Moggy original wiring, positive earth.

In the absence of sound advice, the plan is to have a go with the above, so watch out for explosions from North Devon...

There should be no yellow wires. Perhaps the white wires have just "yellowed" with age.

The system will need a live connection to work. Presently you don’t have one?

Thanks for the replies. A couple of follow on questions:

1. The old distributor (25D, points) must have had a live supply? If so, would not one of the three remaining wires be the live?
2. If not, where do I find one (the instructions helpfully say "connect to the ignition" ("pop to the shops","change your socks"))?
3. Does anyone have any Valium spare?

The three Wires of the Apocalypse look very much in their original custard/custard and black hue.

I am deeply grateful

Technically, no. The distributor simply took the ‘earth‘ side of the coil and switched it by the operation of the contact points.

Originally you should have had a white wire with black tracer that ran from the coil +ve to the side of the dizzy. You simply disconnect that, insulate the ends to be tidy, and leave it alone. You would have had a plain white wire connected to the coil -ve. That wire came from the ignition switch and is the ignition feed.

You will still need a feed to the coil to provide low tension so that thye high tension can be generated. The electronic dizzy still switches the LT in the same way that the points did.

Perhaps a photo or two would help...
