Crankshaft pulley nut size

Post by johngrigg »

I am about to embark on fitting a new timing chain to my 948 and in preparation have been reading every thing I can get my hands on from which I have gleaned to that the the thing most likely to present a problem is the crankshaft pulley nut. I propose to use a rattle gun to loosen it but will need to buy a socket. The list of spanner sizes on here says it is 3/4 Whitworth. I find this strange as I have found engine nut spanner sizes to invariably be UNF I can't measure the nut accurately without removing the radiator. Can some knowledgeable person please confirm the size.
If it indeed Whitworth the next problem will be finding an impact socket that size here in Oz. I have a chart which suggests that 3/4 Whitworth is very close to 33mm so would I be ok to use a 33mm metric socket which is readily available here
TIA

Just measured mine and 33mm seems spot on...

This is what I use, a cut down 3/4" ring spanner, a sharp tap usually works.
It measures 33.5 mm across the flats.

I've been using a deep 33mm socket for 30 years. It covers the starter handle bolt and the shallow bolt (1275 engine).

You will need a very deep socket to get over the starter dog, I ended up cutting a socket in half and welding a piece of exhaust tube in.
