painting advice please

Post by stuffedpike20 »

If you had a new wing to fit, how would you go about painting it?

What is the best way to remove the black protective paint?

Do you then use etch primer, acrylic primer and finally top coat?

Would you spray stone chip on the inside of the wing?

Thanks for any advice.
John.

Is it a Heritage wing or a pattern one?
Heritage wings are already coated with a good quality etch.
Pattern ones are not and the coating should be removed before applying one.
Once you have a good etch, then a good undercoat followed by top coats. Personally I don't like the finish of stonechip and I would paint the inside surfaces of a new wing with coats of primer, undercoat and then a gloss of some sort. I'd probably brush these coats on but that is a personal thing!
Rust on wings starts from the inside so it is important to coat it well with something.

The primer on cheaper panels usually wipes off with cellulose thinner, I've been using epoxy primer for a few years now and it seems great stuff, It will need some sort of protection from stone chips on the inside if you are going to regularly use it, I use a stone chip for this which can be overcoated with body colour if required. You will also need to seal the seam at the front from both sides

Before you do anything with paint though make sure it fits, ours required a lot of fettling.
