Silly question I know...but

How many times can you Autoglym a car before you get down to bare metal?

Sick of polishing mine. It never keeps a shine.

No idea.
I never polish a car, Minor or otherwise, I just use wash/wax all in one type car wash .... Wash and leave it, dry it off with a soft cloth if it looks like water marks,... the Minor is Black which shows the water marks.
The last one was a huge 5ltr container from an auto-jumble stall..

It depends how thick and soft the paint is. The paint on the old MX5s is notoriously soft and it's not unknown for DIY'ers with a DA polisher to go through to the primer.

I haven't polished our Traveller since we bought it in 2010. It's waxed to within an inch of it's life, but never polished as there are no imperfection in the paint that need polishing out.

How smooth is the paint? Can you feel imperfections on the surface? If so then a going over with a clay bar might help.

LOL it should take a while unless you use a rotary polisher or if it's been badly resprayed
I've done a few cars as a hobby over the last few years
here is my Morris i think it was resprayed about 10-50 years ago not perfect but does keep a shine
what colour is you Minor?

My car is green, and has horrible original paint.

Almond green is the worst colour to keep its shine. I last polished mine about twenty years ago.

Just use a quality wax

I would have thought that Autoglym is a quality wax.

Over the years I have tried,

T cut followed by carnuba.
T cut followed by Autoglym.
Autoglym followed by Autoglym.

Is there a polish that just keeps building up, rather than cutting the paint at all?

I've started using Harley Wax, pure carnauba wax. Goes on like melted butter and polishes up lovely

It seems to me that the secret of a long lasting shine is good quality paintwork rather than a good quality polish and many older cars simply cannot be polished back to a high gloss very successfully because of poor paint.
Most wax polishes - as opposed to cutting pastes - are not abrasive, so you can polish a car many many times without fear of polishing through. It will also depend on how good and how thick the paint is of course.
It is always worth a try but poor quality paint which has lost its shine cannot always be polished to a gloss and retain it for very long whatever products you use

Yes, that is true. When I got my car the paintwork had a kind of bloom on it which could not really be T-cut properly and in a couple of places was worn through to an undercoat. Over the years some rust got in the bottom of the doors so when a distant relative died and left me a little money, I had it all fixed up and resprayed. Now I just wax it occasionally an it looks great.
