Marina breather\carb question

Novice mechanic so please excuse my questions. I've been reading Matt Tomkins book which I think is excellent. I've come across a couple of points which I'd appreciate help with.

1. I'm trying to identify the breather in my 1275 Marina engine. Is it the part that I've ringed in the photo? Do you ever need to clean them out and if so what's the best way?

2. I think I have a HIF44 carb? Is the only way to identify if its a hif38/44 taking it off and measuring it? I'm thinking about a different needle for improved performance as mentioned in the book but need to know which carb it is. I'll then pay an engine tuning expert to set it up properly.

This Mini Site compares the 2 externally. Apparently, the top image is a HIF38, the bottom a HIF44.

Remove the air filter and measure the venturi 38 = 1 1/2" 44 = 1 3/4".

To clean out the breather canister (ringed) you will need to remove the timing chain cover from the engine.
Access to the inside of the canister is from the internal side of the timing chain cover.
Replace any gauze found inside with a plain stainless steel pan scrub. It is essential that the pan scrub does not contain soap.
