Thought I posted this but maybe not?

Having been doing a lot of work on brakes, knowing there had been a slight leak from the rear axle, finally topped it up to find it very low. Leak is from the rear axle mounting bracket, and the bracket itself has tiny holes. Clearly needs repair and replace.

I'm ok with what needs to be done: remove axle, take to specialist welder for patches both sides and new parts, put it back. Any advice in advance of this very gratefully received in terms of procedure, or someone to go to for the welding or the whole job that is affordable? Thanks

2nd hand axle case or axle maybe more cost-effective as you will probably need to have it blasted to check for corrosion in other areas.

Thanks will bear in mind. Have been looking online but nothing so far and condition of a replacement could be an issue. Mine I think has a different ration to standard. It might also mean swapping all the other parts over. I think it's in pretty good condition aside from where the leak is, as a result of the collection of crud of course.

I have to agree with Bill.
If the casing is rusted through then the casing needs to be replaced.
You never know how thin the metal is in other areas of the axle casing even if it looks ok.
Welding can distort the axle casing leading to further problems.
It is not a difficult job to change over the parts from the old casing.
Try club spares for a axle casing or ask on here.

I don't think I'd rush to buy that particular one to replace one that is rusted. It looks as if it's been used as a boat anchor

I said something like this as an example not just buy it, the op was considering repair or replacement. When he cleans his it will be worse than just one area leaking..They are available from various sources but condition/value as always is the buyers choice.Just trying to help.

Been looking but nothing so far. Mine seems in reasonable condition as is the rest of the car, just rusted where dirt was able to build up and now it's leaking. I think if I can get the thing out anyway that will give me a better idea.

I took a rear axle off of my convertible and found that it had rusted through at that point too. I welded it up and ground it to shape. It was not difficult and I had a successful repair.

Is the axle from a 1968 traveller the same as one from my 1962 saloon? Thanks

Not identical, but should fit - the main difference in the casing is the oil filler plug. The diff ratio will be different, but you can swap the diff.

Thanks. Just looking forward to getting it going now, a long slog trying to work in the open on the drive with all this bl**dy rain and wind...
