My pickup

Post by Oldspot »

Hi all, I’m new here
I haven’t tinkered with a minor for 45 years!
I have acquired a 1969 pickup which I intend to restore ( no idea which imoji to use).
It’s reasonable straight, needs some welding and the thick layers of paint removed. The door bottoms, one sill and floor pan are what I can see at the moment.
So the engine, I thought it would be a good idea to check it out before stripping everything.
The rocker cover is gold so replacement engine it has new hoses, plugs points and the oil looks like it has just been changed.
It does run but the oil pressure switch stays on.
So please what have I got?
950 stamped on the block, engine plate 8G9 R J80663
2A799 RMO 21087/2 cast on near side of the block
Is this going to be ok or should I just upgrade?
Thanks, I am at the very enthusiastic start of a restoration!

The gear box looks like a ribbed case one from a 1098.
Could the oil pressure switch be faulty? You say the engine runs but does it sound good, is it blowing a lot of smoke of any colour?

From the information you have given above you appear to have a reconditioned (Gold Seal?) 950cc engine but the head is off a later 'A' Series - possibly a 1098cc engine as it has a temp gauge take off and the 950cc head does not have a temp take off facility. What is the head casting number? (the number can be found on the top of the head under the rocker shaft - for example 12G202).
As regards the oil pressure you can only get a good idea of the actual oil pressure if you fit a oil pressure gauge and see what the oil pressure is at various engine revs. Everything else is just an educated guess.
I would advise - sort the oil pressure out and then take it from there,

I bled the oil pump and the pressure light went out 😀👍
I am now waiting on a mate to compression test and oil pressure test
