Re: Setting static timing with no reference
Come on chaps, what's all this talk of lights and ohmmeters? This is a Morris Minor. You stick a fag paper between the points and pull very gently. The points let go of the fag paper as they start to open.

Re: Won't start
I'd start with the basics, plugs, points, condenser, good battery terminal contacts. As mentioned make sure the choke is operating correctly. If she was running fine and then just started to struggle to start it's not likely to be compression related. Not to say that the compressions might not great...

...and if you really are getting nowhere just pull the gearbox and it's crossmember out, bolt it to the engine and stick them in together.

Re: standard 1 1/4" carb
When I was growing up with cars (and SUs were current fitment) I was taught to fill the dash pots with 3in1. I guess because it was thin and everybody had a can of it. Nowadays I stick pretty much whatever engine oil is to hand in but I always feel a bit guilty as I was taught as a boy that it shoul...

Re: Front hubs
Grease it up, stick it all together, bolt a wheel on, adjust the brakes, then give it a spin and see what you think. It's a Morris Minor hub not a heart bypass pump. I like your thinking but in this instance don't worry. Where the hub stops now is irrelevant once all that additional mass is bolted t...

Re: Vale: Roy Allingham (BMCecosse)
I've only just found out that we have lost Roy. I should have guessed as I've made a couple of posts without him disagreeing with everything I said. God bless you Roy. May you be in a place where Minors don't rust and everybody realises that Riley drums are a much better idea than disc brakes. You w...

Re: Chassis leg repair
All you need do is mark the remaining section of chassis leg a known distance from the centre of the suspension mounting hole. When you remove the old leg you will be left with the bolt holes for the engine mount. These get you in about the correct position and a bolt here holds things in place nice...

Re: Recommended wheel cylinders
I'll happily fit something like a pattern wing. I know it's not as good as the real McCoy but in most cases the savings make it worth the compromise. A new pattern wing is certainly better than a rusted out original wing and that is sometimes the choice due to cost. However brakes are another matter...

Re: Rear Brakes
Release the handbrake cables' tension by undoing the nuts inside the car. Now see if you can adjust the rear shoes and get a good brake. If not pull the drums and see what's wrong. If you do get the foot brake working well on the rear adjust the handbrake until that too functions. Don't try doing bo...

Painting a Minor. How cheap, how long?
I wouldn't recommend it but with a tin of Nato paint and roller it's perfectly possible to do it in under 2 hours and for less than £20[frame] http://mmoc.org.uk/mbimage.php?src=1476303847_1080 [/frame] Needless to say it was very ropey before I started. It's pretty ropey now but at least it's an ev...

If it was this country I'd have reported the tester. I think the inspection for classic cars in Southern Ireland must consist of counting the wheels to make sure they are all there.amgrave wrote:Once it's done change the MOT tester

Re: Top hose cracking up!
It's clearly just a poor quality part. It does not matter whether it's reinforced with Kevlar or cotton, it's just the cheap rubber that is falling apart. I fitted a set of Kevlar hoses to my Jaguar over a decade ago and they are still perfect. The fact that Bull Motif were ready with the ozone argu...

Re: clutch change
I always pull the gearbox out - but I have a 4 post lift.
In my younger days I would have done the same with 4 wheel ramps or some axle stands and a bit of laying on the floor.
All you need do to the engine is remove the heater valve so that it can be tilted back without fouling the bulkhead.

Re: Clutch components beyond salvage?
I never put an engine or gearbox back without fitting a new clutch assembly. Even on a Minor where I can have the box out in under an hour.
Make sure your new friction plate moves smoothly on the splines. Looks like there has been a fair bit of moisture in there.

Re: another clutch problem
On Phil's link: It's spring 77 that should pull the clutch fork back onto nut 66. this should then pull through the rod and linkages to pull the pedal up until the pad 15 is against the underside of the floor. If everything outside the bellhousing is free you should be able to grab the threaded end ...
