Bleeding newly fitted disc brakes
Have fitted ESM discs to the front, Wolseley 1500 to rear, these rebuilt with new cylinders. Re-rubbered existing brake master cylinder as it was in good condition. The top hat was omitted from the rebuild. The car has a servo, but installed at correct angle. Now finding it really difficult to bleed...

Re: Steering arm/track rod end
For info the paint was Rustoleum for steel beams from a tin over an anti rust primer. Would have used yellow hammerite but don't find the colour density very good.

Re: Steering arm/track rod end
Thanks for the tips - in the end cleaning the joint of copaslip and jacking up the kingpin whilst using a bar and loop of rope to push down with my foot to lock up the taper enabled me to gently cut the thread into the nylock - like using a tap. So in celebratory mode here's a piccie of the entire r...

Re: Steering arm/track rod end
Hi, some TREs have a helpful Allen key head, I'll degrease it and try thin nose pliers and hammer on top carefully avoiding thin top and grease nipple. For same reason G clamp won't work. Unhelpfully nylock is completely level with base of bolt otherwise I could cut a screwdriver slot. Maybe I will ...

Steering arm/track rod end
Replacing track rod ends and have found the new taper rotates in the steering arm as you try and tighten the nylock nut. Track rod end has a grease nipple on top
Any tricks of the trade to overcome this?
No non nylock nuts to be seen in the workshop!

Re: front damper oil
Thanks Phil, valves already removed when using lever dampers as top link for adjustable telescopics.
Sadly the valves were safely stored before moving house and workshop.,.... Yet to turn up. So it's a just in case..

Memory fade
Just refitting the front adjustable shock absorbers after refurbishing front suspension. The lower mounting consists of two rectangular plates which have one radiused corner each (ESM). Does the radius face outwards or inwards towards the engine?

Re: ESM disc brakes Ford, alloy hub.
Thanks Phil, will look out for Cortina manual - which mark?
Spoke to ESM this morning. They emailed their instructions for the kit. Re the alloy hubs they reported no recent issues or returns. They weren't able to say what if anything they had changed in the manufacture of them.

Re: ESM disc brakes Ford, alloy hub.
Thanks for the attached. Couldn't agree more about having the necessary tools, knowledge and experience to tackle safety critical items. In general terms the installation is straightforward - some info comes from club postings etc like top hat seal. However specifics re disc run out, bearing adjustm...

ESM disc brakes Ford, alloy hub.
I've just taken delivery of the conversion kit from ESM for the above. Bit surprised to not see any general arrangement diagram or instructions included.
Is there a leaflet or thread that anyone knows of re installation?
Thank you

Re: Differential oil seal?
What seems to be emerging is that ensuring the correct torque when replacing the nose seal is the most important parameter. I became more concerned with the preload and so didn't torque beyond 132 ft lbs cos the preload seemed to be whizzing up. In retrospect I should have focussed on the torque. Ho...

Re: Differential oil seal?
Have now installed new crush washer, oil seal and torqued up to 132ft pounds. No shims added, seen or removed. The preload is now high 12 occasionally 13 foot lbs on exerting a steady pull on the propshaft coupling with string and digital luggage scale. A bit looser in fact than a spare 4.2 diff I h...

Re: Differential oil seal?
Have stripped down and extracted crush washer which had to be fine chisel cut longitudinally it was so compressed on pinion shaft. Height (crushed) is 18.77mm. the two new crush washers are 20.69 and 20.79 respectively. Can I use one of the new crush washers and progressively tighten up to get requi...

Re: Differential oil seal?
Update, seal fitted correctly. Torqued up pinion bolt but marks made on pinion bolt and shaft at disassembly just miles off. I assume whoever removed the oil seal torqued it up to unknown value. So incrementally tightened bolt in initial 10 ft lb steps. Measured the preload using electronic luggage ...

Re: Differential oil seal?
Now ready to reassemble.
1) Which way does the pinion oil seal face IE are the lips of the seal towards the diff or propshaft?
2) Does the seal fit flush with the casing or does it sit at the diff end of the housing?
Many thanks
