Re: Differential oil seal?

Have now now marked and removed pinion nut, lock washer and flange to reveal NO oilseal. The prop shaft flange bearing surface polished up easily so no need for a protective shield. Noticed that the outer pinion bearing cage is a bit distorted on one side - see photo. It doesn't seem to affect the s...

Re: Differential oil seal?

Thanks for the advice and knowledge. Have now stripped out the leaking differential unit. Noticed that the fresh oil in the diff when drained appears to have tiny flakes 1mm at most of a gold colour and even tinier specks of the same colour. Could it be steel fragments coloured by the oil? Might I b...

Re: Differential oil seal?

The Diff I think was a flea bay purchase. I haven't done any more than clean and swap into refurbed axle. Thinking about stripping out diff from car and bolting up in old axle casing to give a bit of purchase for loosening/ tightening pinion nut and a safer working environment. After marking up pini...

Re: Differential oil seal?

Thanks for the replies. I've been through the relevant threads and looked at the videos. I can see that the tricky bit of the operation is to manage the tightening torque in relation to the correct preload. Not sure I have the tools to measure the preload or the experience and come to that a robust ...

Differential oil seal?

Now building up my new running gear for Moggie. Wolseley1500 rear brakes, new handbrake arrangement, konis and treated to anti tramp bars. All very beautiful with hardened half shafts. 3.9 diff....., Final task to fill the diff with oil. Unhappily as fast as I poured it in - it poured out of the nos...

Re: Overheating - possible culprit?

So, adjusted timing which was considerably retarded. This improved the overheating. No boiling over/ water loss as before. Thermostat working ( had been tested previously out of car). Temp gradient in radiator. On return from run put compression tester on - 110psi dry, 120 wet..... New Sealey gauge ...

Re: Overheating - possible culprit?

Update.... All re-assembled so test flight this evening. First drive and no change at all. Boiling over even with 7lb radiator cap. Intense frustrated scrutiny followed. Discovered rubber vacuum advance connection to distributor had cunningly failed in two places but no sign from side or top. Replac...

Re: Overheating - possible culprit?

Hi, water pump on examination did have minor corrosion to impeller vanes however it all worked fine. The thermostat didn't have a hole drilled in it but the head has a bypass hose. Rad cap is a 4.5 lb one which seems in working order but a bit tatty.

Re: Overheating - possible culprit?

No signs of cracking in ports or head. Exhaust ports all similar. Plugs and head of pistons were oily on stripping down, but it wiped off. It will get reassembled - lapped in valves but fine really. They didn't leak when combustion chamber filled with paraffin overnight. Then I'll check timing..... ...

Re: Overheating - possible culprit?

Hi, rear drain plug clear. Yes the water did appear to contain gas - bit like a geyser really - afraid coolant was pretty murky anyway. No physical signs of damage to cylinder head - what do the photos of the cylinder head gasket suggest? It's having a head gasket change anyway so I'll do compressio...

Overheating - possible culprit?

Recently my 1098 with 12G940 head, maniflow, HIF38 which has performed fine for some years has developed an overheating problem. Even in cool weather temp climbs, electric fan makes no difference and boils over. Stripped down and thermostat and water pump were fine, rad not clogged, airflow not obst...

Re: What did it cost back in the day....

Thank you for the estimate of circa £700. As HMRC might want a bit of harder proof - any ideas as to where a period price list or adverts of the time might be sourced?
Thank you

What did it cost back in the day....

Is anyone able to tell me the cost as new for a 1967 two door smoke grey 1098 Morris Minor saloon on a typical forecourt back in 1967....
Why you ask.
Apparently knowing this figure is vital if you want your Limited Company to become the owner of a classic company car.
Hope someone can help.

Perspex Windscreen repair

This is picking brains territory. Can anyone help? A friend has a retro speedboat with a smoked perspex curved windshield. Unfortunately the right hand section was smashed in an accident. Does anyone know a specialist who can heat and bend 5mm perspex to shape? Fortunately the windshield section is ...

Rear hub bearing carrier

Could anyone tell me the relevant tap for the threaded bolt holes in the rear axle bearing carrier for the screws that secure the halfshaft flange and the brake drums?
Thank you
