Re: Disc brakes.
I have an Owen Burton Ford based disks that have been fitted over thirty years years without a problem. Still on the original pads.

Re: Gearbox repair /replacement
Hi Lizzy. I had a gearbox that needed replacing about 20 years ago. I had a renewed exchange box from a company near Heathrow. It locked solid after a few weeks and I had to send it back for a replacement. The second box has been trouble free ever since. I think a box that despite this a replacement...

I used copper grease on mine (I used to steal it from work). Works well.

Re: No MOT
Brilliant. Thanks for that. We came back to the UK from France last year. In France the MOT for classic cars was every five years.

No MOT
I was out of the country when the change in MOT rules came into effect. I have a current MOT, in order to re-register my 1969 Traveller in the UK. I understand that it is no longer a legal requirement on vehicles of a certain age, but do I need to fill in a form or anything else when it comes up for...

Re: Rear axle repair
I took a rear axle off of my convertible and found that it had rusted through at that point too. I welded it up and ground it to shape. It was not difficult and I had a successful repair.

Re: How many of you can weld, and how did you learn?
I worked at an engineering factory and became a welder there. We made valves for the Nuclear and petro - chenical industry so our welds were tested to LLoyds standard. We used argon arc TIG, MIG and S.M.A.W. (stick) welding with just a little gas welding and brazing. When I converted a two door salo...

Re: Remote battery isolator
That is food for thought as I have an anti theft battery switch fitted to the battery, but I have to open the bonnet to use it. I was looking for a short term switch that did not require lifting the bonnet for when I am making frequent stops. It will only be required for the fused side of the electr...

Re: Remote battery isolator
Thank you all for your comments, They mirror my thoughts, The reason for the drain is that ten years ago I fitted a CD player that I bought at a car boot sale foe £1.00. It worked fine when the car was parked but the CDs jumped when the car went over a bump. I was going to take it out and throw it a...

Remote battery isolator
I'm having problems with battery drainage and have fitted a screw down battery isolator. But this means I have to open the bonnet every time I want to use it. I have seen these remote isolators and wondered if any one has experience of using one.

Re: Conversion from discs back to drum brakes
I can only agree with the previous comments. I fitted a Ford disc kit from Mr Burton in the eighties. I also changed to silicone fluid at the same time and I have eliminated the annual rear brake cylinder overhaul. My wheels do not stick out either. As far as maintenance is concerned, I am still run...

My first port of call would be the striker plate and latch. They could have moved too far forward. Just loosen them and move tham back. I hope it is as simple as that.

Re: Planning a long trip
Good plan. Here are a few thoughts I have to start the ball rolling. The best thing about a Minor is that it can be easily fixed almost anywhere in the world that has a decent postal service (probably not Russia). The longest run I did in my Traveller was a five country trip to West Germany and back...

Re: Annual Insurance Fun.
I think it is all because modern insurance companies use a standard computer system that has no box to tick for classic cars like ours. Every minor on the road, including mine, has been modified but the youngsters filling in the forms have no concept of this. I had to lie in order to get a quote las...

Re: ESM disc brake kit
"if replacing std fluid with silicone, I need flush the system thoroughly?" Very thoroughly. Any old fluid will negate the benefits of using silicone. As you are changing the front brakes I would strip the original rear brake cylinders and replace all the flexables if they are old. The ori...

Re: ESM disc brake kit
It would not make any sense to mix it with std fluid. It will mix but will defeat the object. Best to use when you do a complete brake overhaul. At least then you can be assured everything is up to standard.

Re: Third brake light
I have a similar problem with LED internal lights. I read somewhere that because LEDs use less current they are sensitive to stray currents. Apparently the excess current is flowing through ordinary bulbs all the time (as leakage) but is not enough to make the bulb glow. The writer suggested fitting...

Re: ESM disc brake kit
Hi BaritoneUke, I fitted Ford based disks from Owen Burton around thirty years ago. The best thing I have ever done. I am still on the original brake pads and have never had a problem. As far as I can recall, it was a straight forward, nuts and blost swap. My Instructions called for the removal of a...
