Re: The old boat

Hi David, sorry for this late reply but I havn't visited the web site for a couple of weeks. I re routed the filler pipe just to maximise the available space in the rear. If I get to visit a break in the remote wilds of Wales, Devon or Cornwall I might just have to kip in the back of the old boat so...

Re: The old boat

The restoration tale nears it's end. It has taken a year longer than I had envisaged but I would say that I have made some rather drastic alterations to the old boat along the way. The major one being swapping in a different engine and box after the problems with the old A series rather got to me. A...

Re: An American Moggie ~ My '59 Morris Minor 1000 2-door saloon

Just a very small thought, I rarely have very large ones, with all the welding and panel replacement that you have superbly carried out, have you measured the door openings and or fitted any cross-bracing? Any welding can have serious consequences for panel fit and I would hate you have big problems...

Re: The old boat

Hi Dave, As El Caminos go this one was a real P.O.S. but it did the job for us. It's on the high seas right now and with any luck the boat will meet up with the storm of the century and end in a watery grave and so we won't have to bother with it. Now with due regard to that style of motor car,I rea...

Re: The old boat

Hiya Dave, Sorry I missed you in LA and condolences regarding your bereavement. My dear old Auntie passed away just after Christmas and the comment went round that all the family used to see each other at weddings, now they see each other at funerals, such is the passing of time. We had our own litt...

Re: The old boat

Blimey, there are just so many little jobs that need attending to before you can say 'Yep car is done'. I'm onto the interior at the mo. And of course none of the carpets are fitting right because I have different seat belts and handbrake position due to the Marina rear axle and the gear lever is mi...

Re: The old boat

I'm very nearly finished on this restoration/modification of one old traveler which really should have gone to the crusher. It was the wood that saved it and I guess I'm glad it did, although the work has taken a lot longer that I originally estimated but isn't that always the way? Not much more to ...

Re: The old boat

I'm thinking metalflake, I'm thinking flames, I'm thinkin scollops and frosting fades. It's a good thing I'm the only one...

Re: The old boat

I am extremely pleased to report that my A to B conversion is finally complete and I fired up the 1800 MGB engine yesterday and everything was running like clockwork. It has taken about 6 months to do the complete conversion, I did think it would be a fairly straightforward swap especially as the en...

Re: The old boat

Hi Mike, yeah my servo is in a similar position and I had already moved it back as far as it would go but the main problem was the big oil cooler pipes that the B motor has. I had fitted braided hoses and AN fittings which are even fatter, however I think I have just about got things sorted now as I...

Re: The old boat

Rockin on with the old boat and I'm nearly about ready to fire the motor up. But I have a slight interference problem with the oil filter or rather the oil filter fitting on the B engine which is a bit weird. It's an upside down attachment that bolts on to the block, it sticks out the side and the f...

Re: The old boat

The exhaust manifold pipework is now finished plus the three into one collector is all done. I have just got to make up a small connecting piece to the existing tailpipe which is 1" and a half so should be big enough. I was thinking of running 2" pipe all the way out the back but I am goin...

Re: The old boat

I would'nt say I've nearly finished but I have got a fair old way down the road to completion. The engine and box has been in and out a few more times and there is now a fitting for the MGB master cylinder onto the gearbox crossmember, I have been trying to keep as much stuff in the BL house as poss...

Re: The old boat

It has taken a few days to get things sorted but the B series engine is now happily located into the Old Boat. Although I had previous information to suggest that the engine and box had to be elevated somewhat, in fact the opposite turned out to be the actual case. It entailed chopping the existing ...

Re: The old boat

If that's the one with the blue saloon on rostyles, then yes, in fact his positive work and comments swung me from a crossflow Ford to the B series. Plus of course fitting the MG lump seems to keep it somewhat in the family and does'nt put the car immeadiately into the hot rod classification. Also r...

Re: The old boat

One week on and the MGB is all stripped out. I've thrown a tape measure over the B motor and although it is tight, it will fit, however I will need a very thin rad and a supplementary electric fan so there will be a bit of work there and the transmission crossmember will definitely need a short back...

Re: The old boat

Actually, with all the grief this lump has given me I was seriously thinking about throwing it in the back of the MG and good ridance to it. But I have an old ex cycle racing pal who now races a frogeye sprite with a 1420 cc A series and as he blows these old motors up with remarkable regularity (be...

Re: The old boat

Last post was mid June but I've been a bit crook and ended up in hospital, again, at the end of June. Most of July has been spent getting me all sorted and I'm just about up and running now. That's the good news, the bad news is my motor unfortunately still leaks oil. All the work, all the expense, ...
